I have a Fitbit Ionic. When I swim, it is able to auto-detect my exercise properly. It seems to log everything fairly accurate (except for the heart rate, which below my actual rate). On the Fitbit dashboard, it shows my exercise correctly, but I noticed that swim minutes are not counted as active minutes.
Yesterday, I swam twice for about 20 - 25 minutes each time. The dashboard showed the information properly (i.e. minutes swimming), but that is not reflected in my total active minutes for the day. Any one has an idea why that is the case and how to fix?

Hello @LucG are you saying that when looking at the recorded swim there have been no active minutes recorded? If so then there will be no active minutes transferred to the days total.
When it comes to active minutes. these are the minutes where the body burns 3 times than what is burnt at rest. It is not based on the time spent exercising.
The calories are determined by the rate rate and as you say, the heart rate necausebof the water, is being read low. This could explain the low active minute count .

You got it. Fitbit says that my swim burned 2 calories per minute. That would be below the 3 METs that you mentioned. This explains it. Thank you

I can't say that it will help but try turning the heart rate off for the next swim.
This will change the calorie calcilationcto use only arm movements.

@Rich_Laue, turning off the heart rate monitor was a good idea, but unfortunately, it didn't work. Same result as before. That's ok, though, I'm more interested in the results in my personal fitness than in the dashboard.
Thank you for your help, I appreciate it.

Oh well, i really was only grabbing ideas based on how the non heart rate models compute active minutes.
