I've been trying to upgrade my Ionic to the 2.1 version of the OS without any luck. It sits on the "Connecting to your FitBit Ionic" for about 5 minutes, then asks me if I want to retry, then asks me if I want to restart Bluetooth, then asks me if I want to try over WiFi. It just seems to do this forever but never actually updates anything.
Things like daily steps are sync'ing perfectly fine. Is upgrade just broken? Or perhaps is there another way to upgrade, such as over the USB cable?

Have you set up your Ionic to connect to your home WiFi? The update will work a lot quicker/smoother over WiFi vs Bluetooth.

These are the exact steps I take before updating, I've not run into any issues yet. So it might be worth you giving them a try if you haven't already done so.
First of all I will restart the device a few times by pressing and holding the left button and bottom right button together for 15 secs (until you see the fitbit logo).
I will go to the fitbit app on my phone then press the account card at the top right - select Ionic - WiFi settings - tap your saved WiFi network and then hit connect (password box should say unchanged, no need to re-enter it). Once I've done that, on the Ionic I will go to settings - about - then scroll down to IP address. If it has an IP address there I know it's connected to WiFi and should be good to go, if it says WiFi off then I know there is an issue.
Now I don't know if this makes any difference, but I've never had an unsuccessful FW update and I've had the Ionic since launch. Either way it's worth posting if any of it helps you.
Also depending on charge level, WiFi will only be activated over a certain threshold (can't remember the exact percentage). So it's always advised to connect the device to the charger when attempting a FW update.
Failing that, I might be tempted to give it a full factory reset.

Thanks! So, when I go into the "WiFi Settings" on the app, it just spins forever at a blank screen. The WiFi says off on the Ionic. I know I've configured it before, but maybe the settings were lost. I tried on a few different WiFi networks, same problem.
I did reboot the phone and Ionic, and now Bluetooth seems to connect. However, it spent about 20 minutes upgrading. Then the watch rebooted and went back to the phone screen, but the app stayed on the "Upgrading" screen from then on. I waited about 10 hours, no change. Seems totally hung.
Perhaps the factory reset is worth a shot.Sat here for 10+ hours

Make sure that the Fitbit app is up to date.
Your phone is connected to the same Wifi.
Have the Ionic charging, at this time Wifi is turned on while charging Even so if the battery is to low I had problems.
If problems continue I would perform a shutdown of the tracker.
