I am a swimmer and would love to use the watch in the water

I received a fitbit Ionic as a gift and love the watch. I am not going to ask the gift giver if they have a receipt for the watch because that is extremely tacky.

That said, there is nothing wrong with the watch and I have no plans on returning it. However, I am a swimmer and would love to use the watch in the water. I am leery to do so after reading about fitbits return policies on these message boards.

If I swim with the watch and it stops working, will fitbit exchange the watch? How much would it cost to fix a fitbit if it breaks and is not covered? It'd be awesome if they were one of those companies that want to keep you wearing their product and want to keep you telling your friends about them.

Fitbit support may ask you for a receipt to prove that you purchased from an authorized retailer. Unfortunately Fitbit may insist on that if you need to request warranty service. Its a bit of a mystery why Fitbit requires proof-of-purchase, when other hardware vendors provide warranty service based on a unique serial number.

Good luck!

Hi @diesel4now.  It is designed to be used in the water so I wouldn't worry about that.  Just use and enjoy it.

If it does break -- in the water or for some other reason -- during the 1 year warranty fitbit will probably want to see a receipt before replacing it. Most companies do.  If that happens, there is nothing tacky about asking your friend for the receipt. She or he may or may not be able to get it by then, but lots of folks buy things on-line and getting receipt in situation is not hard.  And if you can't find get the receipt, contact support anyway, explain the situation, and see what happens.

You could always try drying it out with rice first, sometimes that does the trick.

Yeah... I haven’t gotten it in the water yet out of fear of it breaking the watch. It may just have to be a land watch for me.

@diesel4now, as @Baltoscott says, it is designed for water, so you should feel comfortable about taking it for a swim.

The only time I have had to contact Fitbit over a warranty issue they asked for a receipt, or else for me to let them know it was a gift.  I said it was a gift and they replaced it no problem.  That was quite some time ago, I admit, so I can't confirm that is still their policy, but I think most people have found their customer support open and receptive.

Having said that I would be, in the first place, surprised if your Ionic failed the water test, and, if that unlikely event happened. I would be even more surprised if Fitbit did not honor the warranty.

I say, Go for it...!

With Fitbit financial situation, support has been strict with requiring a receipt from authorized dealer. Without that the best you can expect is a 25% discount on next purchase.
