Fitbit Update: Fitbit OS2.1 has been released to 100% of users!

Hi all! Smiley Happy

I am excited to announce the release of Fitbit OS 2.1! (Firmware Version: 27.32.10.15)

We've started to roll out this update to 10% of Ionic users. This is a progressive rollout, and all Ionic users can expect to have it within a few weeks. We roll out releases in phases as a cautionary measure so that we can monitor performance closely and make adjustments if needed.

WHAT’S NEW

Introducing quick replies. Send customized responses to text messages and messages from select messaging apps with your Fitbit watch. Note that this feature is currently only available on watches paired to an Android phone. For more information, see How do I respond to messages with my Fitbit watch?

This release includes other bug fixes and improvements.

Step by step instructions for updating your Ionic can be found here.

I recommend updating your Ionic over a home Wi-Fi network as this can greatly reduce the time it can take to get set up. For more information on connecting your Ionic to Wi-Fi, check out this article

If you run into any trouble updating your Ionic, I can also recommend reviewing these troubleshooting tips

Looking forward to hearing everyone's feedback on the latest release. If you have any questions, feel free to let me know!

@SunsetRunner  The firmware update is rolled out in stages so it can be monitored for issues and be tweaked if necessary. Once it has been made available to your account, you will get a prompt on the dashboard of your App to update your trackers firmware. There is no way for you opt for how quickly this happens so it is a case of waiting.

Is there anyway to set the firmware back to the first version?  I lost functionality with the second firmware update, and now I read how the third firmware update is bricking devices, and I'm just to concerned to try it.  Is it possible to set it back to the very first version?

Best Answer

@ToddBrennan no, there is no method to downgrade the firmware.

Technically this would fall under software not firmware as you don't permanently "flash" the new version onto the chip, instead it is stored in the internal storage and is lost and reset back to the original during a factory reset (devices using true firmware would not do this).  If Fitbit pulls the version a factory reset would then require the initial setup again which would download the latest approved version.  So your best option is to hope they officially pull the current version and then do a factory reset to end up after hours of effort back to the previous version. Sadly there is no way to stop the checking for updates during the initial setup.

I will be returning it. I'm just amazed that clearing a notification in the
watch does not clear the notification from the phone. It seems like such
basic functionality. Thanks for your input!--

Thanks,

@Talltech it does appear in the latest update that clearing a notification on the Ionic clears it on the phone.

That said, I'm suffering from many other issues still (most notably the daily calibration reminder).

Updated my Iconic and it was fine but by the end of the day the screen went dark and won’t wake up. The light on the back is still blinking so it appears to still be functioning. Just no display.

My Ionic has just gone crazy in the last 24 hours . No heart rate monitor now a step counter that doesn't stop - just so angry that in just 3 months of using the Ionic , I have already had to return one to the retailer and now it looks as though another will have to go back. Considering the cost - £300 original outlay - I am really disappointed in the performance of this product.

The latest update just eats battery

why is it working with my crappy old 2014 android 4.4.2 acer smartphone (not on the supported devices list) and not with my 2018 android 8 honor view 10? work on your bluetooth connection! i can't sync anything, much less get notifications on my phone.

deadline is until i find someone who's willing to buy this useless piece of hardware.

For those of you having battery life issues after the update, go into your settings and ensure that "Always Connected" didn't toggle on.  That setting, if on, will eat a lot of power in both your Fitbit and your phone.

I don’t think it’s a battery issue. I had it in the charger all night and the display is still not activating.

On my Android device, notifications are not being cleared between devices.
Are you on Android?--

@Talltech yes, I'm on a Nexus 5X running Android 8.1.

What I have found is I need to tap the specific message and then sometimes there is a button "Mark as Read" or "Clear". If I use that method, it clears on my phone. If I swipe it away or use the "Clear All" it does not clear it on my phone.

@SunsetRunner Sorry to hear that your Ionics screen is unresponsive. I checked with our support staff and they advised that you had chatted with them. I've gone ahead and requested that they follow up with you via email to assist.

@NRM1979 @Navigator243 If you are still experiencing short battery life. I would recommend checking out these troubleshooting tips. If the issue persists, I can also recommend potentially changing to a different clockface, as some 3rd party clockfaces can drain battery more quickly.

@SunsetRunner Thanks for the help!

@RunningVegan Our team is aware of the "Notification service not running" banner that some Android users are receiving. We are currently looking into similar reports. For more information, I recommend following this dedicated thread

@LwrHrtRt @debkdelaney In regard to the SPo2 sensor, this feature is not currently available. In the future, this sensor could give consumers the opportunity to identify potential health issues like sleep apnea. Fitbit is still exploring how this could manifest in the consumer experience, but such technology would use this sensor.

@Mark2018 If you are still are not receiving sleep stages, I recommend checking out the tips detailed in this article

@ToddBrennan Thanks for sharing the information you received from OziByte. I will be sure to pass this on to our App Gallery team. I will also forward them your feedback in regard to you not being able to select cities in the Weather app. In the meantime, I can recommend these troubleshooting steps to help with Bluetooth connectivity.

Also, from time to time our system may identify certain posts as spam, sorry if this happened to you!

@chukkusmaximus Great you were able to find the auto-wake option (by holding the left button)! Smiley Happy

@Uruzu5 @Krst0 @Jennymer @MrDek Sorry to see you are having a hard time updating. I recommend taking a look at these troubleshooting tips to complete the firmware upgrade process. You might also find these step by step instructions helpful for connecting to Wi-Fi. Let me know how it goes!

@marksmash I followed up with our support team and they have advised that you had already opened a case with them. Glad to see that they were able to provide you with a resolution. Thanks for reaching out!

@jimboebs @Colinm39 @Cantryboy @Talltech @sfringer To clarify, it is expected behavior that texts will be removed from the notifications center on your phone if you check the notification on watch (and vice versa). However, this will not delete the actual notification from your preferred app or SMS service. Hope this helps clear things up. Robot Happy

@EricInFL Thanks for reporting! Our team is aware of an issue where Strava is having difficulty syncing. I can confirm that this is unrelated to the OS2.1.1 release. For more information, I recommend following this dedicated Strava thread

@phrygiantheory @Dasmith73 @imeson79 @MissUrka In regard to the calibration error message, once you have successfully updated to OS2.1.1 (firmware 32.10.20). I recommend attempting to successfully calibrate your Ionic (rather than ignoring the notification).

To calibrate your Ionic, plug in your charging cable and set the watch on a flat surface when prompted.  If you still continue to see this calibration error message or the calibration fails, please let me know so I can pass this informatoin on to our team. Thanks!

@dmweger Sorry your Ionic is no longer paired to your account. To get set up again, I recommend trying these steps

@Talltech @harnold87 @SunsetRunner There is not currently a way to opt-in to the firmware update. Not to worry though! This update will be pushed to all users soon. Smiley Happy

@unixphreak We are working with partners to find ways to bring quick text replies to messaging apps for iOS and Windows users – we hope to share more on this in the future. We’d love to be able to offer quick text replies to our iOS users now, but Apple operates a closed ecosystem that doesn’t allow us to deliver this feature at this time.

@sfringer Thanks for all the candid feedback. Sorry to see that you are experiencing Exercise crashes at the 1 mile mark while you are running. I have forwarded this information to our product team. Could you please let me know if the ramainder of your run (after the crash) is over a mile? Or is it crashing every mile on the mile?

@JamesIonic Sorry you are having GPS issues after the update. I would recommend performing a restart and seeing if the issue persists. If you continue to experience any GPS inconsistencies, I can also recommend performing these troubleshoots. Let me know how it goes!

@petermh Sorry to hear your device is not recording HR. I would recommend performing a restart. If that doesn't resolve the issue, these tips should help!

@Geeman50 I've gone ahead and reached out to our support team on your behalf. They should be in contact within 48 hours with some assistance for your unresponsive screen. Smiley Happy

@haroldalv Great to see that you are successfully updated!

@MattFitbit yes, the remainder of my run is more than one mile and does not crash again regardless of how long it is.

@MattFitbit

You didn’t give a solution for my Fitbit Ionic problems that is in a fast loop of freezing - restarting - freezing - restarting etc. which makes it completely useless since 3 days. So that means that there is no solution you can give and that I can get my money (300 Euros) back? 🤔

And yes! I’m angry and disappointed for getting no help or information in this forum.

I have a Fitbit Ionic since January 2018. It’s my 4th now, during my warranty of 2 years. I hope this one lasts much longer. Updates are dangerous!

It looks like the Ionic isn't the only one with issues with this new FitbitOS version.  The Versa has an unannounced update to 32.10.20 that a not insignificant number of users are factory resetting their devices to get early due to the number of issues they are running into.  Though I imagine things might even be worse for them as newer devices likely have driver issues for the hardware too.
