Ionic VERY slow to charge (as in, 24 hours and still at 60%...)

Replies are disabled for this topic. Start a new one or visit our Help Center.

I got my Ionic a week ago - it took over 24 hours to charge initially and I've tried again a few times - the other night I had it plugged in overnight and it only went from 42% charged to 65% charged...anyone else having this problem? I did all the troubleshooting steps and tried it in several different USB ports...no dice. Any help appreciated!!

Have you tried a charger?

Hi there @mrlew1, welcome to the Forums!

Can you share details about what troubleshooting steps were taken so I don't suggest something that's already been tried please? Thanks!

You might try a charger not connected to your computer.

Yes, my PC and 3 different wall chargers.

Thanks; I've tried 3 different wall chargers in addition to my computer, no improvement.

Thanks for your reply; as per my post, I tried all the things on the fitbit troubleshooting page (https://help.fitbit.com/articles/en_US/Help_article/1190/?l=en_US&fs=RelatedArticle) - using my pc, using a wall charger (I've tried 3 different ones), restarting my fitbit, cleaning the connections, and making sure the device is dry. Last night, it was plugged in for 9 hours and went from 40% to 60%. I'm guessing it may be a bung charging cable, but as the device is brand new, I don't want to shell out for a new one!!

Anyone else having this issue?

Best Answer

@mrlew1, nope, I've not heard of this issue before now.  I routinely take my Ionic down to about a 10% charge level and it takes about 90 minutes to recharge from a USB port on my laptop.

@mrlew1, I haven't seen this before either.  Mine charges amazingly fast.  As you have tried the usual troubleshooting steps I would suggest getting in touch with Fitbit Customer Support on contact.fitbit.com. Be sure to tell them what you have already tried, as that will save time.

@mrlew1 Great to see you on the forums.

Thanks for taking some steps to try and get your Ionic charging again. Can you please confirm if you are using the charging cable that came with your Ionic?

Also, I checked with our support team and saw that you had already opened a case with them. They should be in contact soon!

For anyone else having a similar experience, I would recommend performing each of the steps detailed in this article. I would also recommend making sure that you are using a UL certified wall adaptor. If you get stuck at any point, let me know.

@Julia_G @DonaldMReif @shipo Thanks for the help!

@mrlew1

USB charging goes through a negotiation scheme. I don't know how much it influences ionic's charging ability. If the consuming device demands more current than what the supply source generates, it can cause issues. For example I have a surge and Blaze and both refuse to charge over my battery bank, however they will charge through a wall wart or pc usb source. It is unlikely you have an issue with charging cable although it could be true as well. Why not exchange it for a new product including the charging cable?.

If you cant charge the new one then it will confirm you have a compatibility issue.

Hiya - thanks for this. Yep, I've tried 4 different charging methods with no improvement; I've contacted support to see if they'll send me a new cable (I want to try that first before replacing the whole thing). Thanks for your reply! Cheers, Mary

Thanks, Matt. Yep, I'm using the cable that came with the watch - it doesn't vibrate when it connects (I think it's supposed to?), but it does charge - really, really slowly. It means I can't wear it to track my sleep as I have to charge it for over 8 hours to get a 20% boost. I'll see what support comes back with!

(and yes, all the chargers I tried are UL certified and of varying strengths.)

Cheers, Mary

Hello! I ended up sending it back and getting a replacement, which works perfectly. 🙂 There was a bit of back and forth and misunderstanding with the support team, but everyone was lovely and quick to respond, which was great. Good luck with yours!

Mine varies enormously.   Sometimes a couple of hours or, like yesterday, the best part of 36 hours!  I have a charger that is like a stand and sometimes get a message saying there's insufficient power!  It doesn't seem to matter whether I use the stand type charger or one of the ones that connect directly to the back of the device!  It's thanks to that feature that I acquired mine in the first place.   It was a retirement present for my husband and he was so fed up at the charging time he stopped using it!
