Ionic keeps rebooting during runs

Has anyone experienced their Ionic rebooting during a run? It seems to be happening at around the 7-8km point. It's not a once-off thing, happening 3 out of 3 runs.

It's a pretty new device--- maybe 2 months old. I do have GPS and music on... Any suggestions? Cheers

Hi all.

Just to add my voice to the frustrating problem of the ionic rebooting repeatedly during runs. I have read on forums that I should try to not play music, which defeats the purpose. The only reason I upgraded from a Charge 3 was precisely for the music function.

Has a solution been found yet?

I am also experiencing the same problem. My device is 3 months old, it rebooted 3 times during a 15km run ( or thereabout because I had to guess the distance in the end despite having a very expensive wrist).

It's pretty frustrating, I have started researching other devices in case Fitbit do not solve this soon. I saw a suggestion on another post to avoid playing music during runs; I bought the Ionic because it can play music.

Wow so this isn't a new thing. You'd figure this would have been resolved by now. Mine has done it twice now. I'll try running with my phone for music and see if that stops it. I wonder if the device is being over tasked with gps, hr monitor, Bluetooth and music. That and the step counter and other background tasks. A possible fix action might be to disable some non-essential background apps while in exercise mode.

Same thing happening to my ionic as well.  At first I thought it was a corrupt music file in my playlist since it was happening at the beginning of the same song every time.  Switched playlists and everything was fine with all songs in the playlist and played that list several times without issue.  Then all of sudden, it started rebooting in the middle of that playlist as well.    Using...

Bose Quiet Control earbuds... 100% battery

Fitbit Ionic... 100% battery

Please Fitbit, update us with the status of this issue.

It then kind of defeats the purpose of having an ionic over other cheaper versions, doesn't it. I specifically bought the ionic for the music function and to avoid having to run with my phone.

Anyway, I have shifted to a different device and I haven't regretted since!

This is still happening to everyone who listens to music and runs. So... what is being done about it? I am fed up with having this happen while training! How long before we get a fix or a refund for these devices so that we are able to get something that works?

Given that I am almost a year in from when I started my complaint session I'd say there's no hope.

Best I can offer is if I don't use the GPS tracking through the "exercise" function and let it auto start by identifying a run it doesn't happen as much. The trade off is that it doesn't always connect to GPS so pace sometimes is based on step count.

I don't know if this will help anyone, my ionic would randomly reboot during activities, so now I manually reboot it between each activity and so far it has not rebooted itself while recording an activity. Anyway I hope this is of use to someone.

Have been having this problem for a couple of years with no fix in sight so thought I would do a little research this morning on the forum.

  1. I have only searched using the key word 'crashing'.
  2. Have not yet searched using key words 'exercise', 'tracking', 'runs lost', 'rebooting', 'running', 'exit', or anything similar.  Exercise has over 500+ topic issues so lost the will to carry on!
  3. For the list below I have gone into every single thread to make sure that it is associated with the Ionic rebooting during exercise.  Couple were swimming the rest were runs.  I have added the date against each in YYYY-MM-DD format
  4. As you can see the first occurrence dates back to 3rd Oct 2017, so we are just over 3 months away from the 3rd anniversary of this issue.  Don't hold out much hope do you!

I am having the same issue. New Fitbit Ionic. One big reason I chose this device is its ability to store music. If you cannot tell me how to resolve it, I will be returning my device.

Is there a solution? This happens every time I run and listen to music at the same time. If there is no solution, I will immediately return the device. THis is one primary reason I chose the Ionic.

  • I faced exactly the same issue for the first several days after buying an Ionic. Reached out this topic and was thinking that is the native hardware issue of Fitbit Ionic until I noted that my watch rebooted every single time at a specific music track.
  • Then I discover that a mp3 track in my playlist was damaged (partial, the player can play a part of it). The problem is, when Ionic music player plays this track, it then immediately crashes and it lets Ionic OS reboots as well. I just simply replaced this damaged file with a good one and it fixed the problem.
  • If you guys are facing such issue, take note if it crashed at a specific track, if yes, 99% probability that because of damaged mp3 file. Hope it helps.
  • If I have more than 10 votes, Fitbit please give me a Charge 4. I help to solve an endless issue that persists years without solution and save your reputation haha.

I have never stored music on my Ionic so that is not the cause of the problem for me. As stated in my previous posts, mine occurs when there is a notification ie I have completed 1km on my run. So the problem is clear for my issue, the resolution from Fitbit is still outstanding after all these years for something fundamental to a smart watch. Fitbit product team and engineers, are you not embarrassed?

Additionally Fitbit moderator, why did you amend my post removing all the analysis I had undertaken showing all of the forum topic posts highlighting the scale of the problem?
