I've been using my Fitbit Ionic for more than a year now, and used for swimming at least once a week, never had a problem before. It worked well after I dry it off. But, since last week, after my swim, it started acting strange. It turns on and I can see the screen, but the top right button doesn't respond, and touch screen is not accurate. I can see notifications coming in and other functionalities working fine. It's very disappointing to see my well-proven watch giving up now. I had a Samsung Galaxy Watch and used it only once in swimming, then it totally stopped working and Samsung refuse to replace as they claim it a water damage. That's insane. So I was really happy with Fitbit Ionic and have been recommending it to few of my friends over Samsung. Now, I'm changing my mind. But, I don't see any other product is so close to Fitbit Ionic when it comes to waterproof. Called the support and they offered me a 25% discount email link on Ionic, which I don't think it's going to help. So pretty much my $300 device didn't last for more than a year. I'm thinking of getting some cheaper device knowing that it won't last long.

I can't claim to know the failure rates, but it's a common issue if you browse this forum. Personally, I find it incredible that a device sold as water resistant with a swimming feature can die within 2 years of buying it and not be seen as faulty manufacturing deserving of a replacement. It may only have a one year warranty on the US (2 in the EU), but in good faith these should be replaced.
