So I got my fitbit ionic yesterday and today when I woke up it showed 70k extra steps. Without reason. Cant understand why. Tried restarting the watch but it shouldnt be so bad. I mean its a **ahem**ing $300 watch.

I feel for you  I know exactly how you feel, what i did is return mine and got a replacement, fitbit don't seem to acknowledge a fault exists, the replacement works fine, i don't have any more phantom steps, you can't delete the steps, trying the driving lig method doesn't work for phantom steps as they don't appear in your activity, i also turn off the fitbit when charging ie plug charger in then go to settings about and shut down. I also wear mine to sleep now.  If you do get a replacement you will need to create a new fitbit account with a different email otherwise those phantom steps will still be there. I personally think there is a bad batch out there.

I too have seen this bug.  I got my Ionic for Christmas and have seen my steps increase for no reason.  I was on my treadmill for 1/2 hour this morning.  My treadmill recorded 3850 steps.  While on the treadmill my Ionic buzzed and said I achieved 8000 steps!  I was only up for a total on 1 hour, there is no way this is acurate.  Is there a firmware fix for this yet?  It is very annoying and seems to be getting more inacurate as time goes on...

Typically 80 minutes walking is approx 10,000 steps so 30 minutes approx 3777 steps

I started with almost 1500 steps.  There were over 8300 steps after the treadmill.  I never had this problem with my Blaze.  There is a bug somewhere...

This morning I awoke with my Ionic saying I had 105 steps while sleeping.  I put it on the charger for 1/2 hour.  Amazingly I had aquired over 1700 steps while charging!  Do I need to return the Ionic and go back to my Blaze?

I got my Ionic In January and I love it. However, I have noticed the phantom steps get logged a couple times a month and I haven’t figured out why. Twice I went to bed before midnight and woke up to +7k steps. Other times I checked my steps mid day and I’d have 3000, a couple hours later I’d have over 20k and I’d be sitting at my desk the whole time. Hopefully Fitbit will fix the problem. For the price of the Ionic it should be more accurate.

Maybe that's how some people manage to get from 50000 to 130000 steps per day ON AVERAGE

I have found that plugging my charger into my desktop computer will sometimes add quite a few steps to my Ionic while charging.  Just a head's up...

While charging from a wall charger works fine...

I woke this morning to find that I had already done more than 10K steps. No wonder I still felt tired!

After opening the iPhone dashboard and synchronizing, the number dropped to something believable.

Can someone please tell me what "log driving" means. Sounds like something one does on a river, wearing spiked boots.

This just happened to me today! I had come back from a run that logged 7000-some steps, I plugged my Ionic to the charger, and then when I checked an hour later, I had somehow logged 5000 more steps! WHAT IS GOING ON? And then my Ionic synced with my app and now my app is also showing that I've somehow taken 12000 steps... This is so annoying because I can't even delete the extra steps! This is a major bug, Fitbit. Fix it!

Hey everyone!

If you're getting steps while your Ionic is charging, I would like you to double check that there wasn't a fan or anything that may have been buzzing or vibrating on the same surface that Ionic was placed on. There's also the main thread that you may want to check for more information.

If this continues happening, please let me know.

Keep me posted.

My Fitbit Ionic was not charging last night, it was sitting on the same spot that I leave it every night.  I woke up this morning to a notification that I had reached my goal for the day (7,500 steps) and by 6:30 it had logged a phantom 8,929 steps.  I have restarted my Fitbit several times and it has not fixed the issue.  It shows one bulk add for the steps and does not break them down by the hours like it usually does.  I can't "log them as driving".  Where is a fix for this??

It seems to have been going on for quite some time.  These are expensive devices.  I received mine for Christmas from my boyfriend and I can imagine his frustration for spending this much money on something that isn't going to work properly.  He could have spent his money on something else for me.

I've also noticed lately that it's not tracking my workouts like it used to.  Same work outs, just not tracking my heart rate properly resulting in an inaccurate reading for my workouts.  This is very frustrating!

I know this is old, but I'm having the same issue. Purchased my Iconic around Christmas, is it too late to send back?

I'm in a step challenge at work and one day I woke up to 83k steps. Sometimes it don't even log my steps, especially if I'm walking up 12 flights of stairs and holding something (like my suitcase or lunch pail). Today after allowing it to charge, I took it off the charger and already had 73k steps! I'm so upset. Ready to go out and purchase either the Blaze or get the Samsung Watch.

Try resetting the Ionic. I only had the problem once.

That's just crazy. I have no way of knowing whether my step counts are off by 10-20-30%, but not numbers like 83K before arising.

There was one morning when my Ionic showed 5K steps before I even walked to the bathroom. Opening the Dashboard (iPhone) app brought it back to a realistic figure.

Hi! That could be the issue for when it’s charging, i’ll Move the charging location and see if it helps. However, it doesn’t explain how it happens when I’m wearing it sitting at my desk 😞

Hey, thanks for the response. I factory reset the whole watch, losing all
data and deleted the app off my phone. I even created another profile with
an alternate email address. After going through installation again, once
the stat screen came up, it is still reading 74K steps! I've since called
Customer Service and they are sending another Iconic. What's interesting
is that I have an old Charge HR that I tried putting back into commission
and once going through the same set up, it too is reading 74K steps. I
just don't understand. There is some kind of glitch that is really trolling
me today. I'm ready to just leave the Fitbit family alone. I have not
used the watch today and I've factory reset both watches at this point and
deleted both apps, using different email addresses. I'm just not sure what
else to do but this is extremely irritating.

Okay, so far I've factory reset, used an alternative email (3rd email) and
a whole different name, birthday, etc.. I didn't add wifi information.
After the almost 40 min install, my numbers are still reading 75,800 steps.
I haven't had the watch on all day and I've factory reset 5 times as well
as factory reset and plugged in my charge and I'm still getting this
number. Uninstalled and reinstalled the app each time. I've been working
diligently on this all day because I truly depend on this for my workouts.
It seems like any fitbit that I plug up to my phone will do this.

Read the posts for the other types of trackers and fitness watches and you will eventually see intermittent issues with other brands. It's not just Fitbit. Sh;t happens
