Ionic will not let me toggle through any other views while in an exercise mode

 So, once I engage in an exercise command on my watch, I am only able to toggle through the exercise function and the (music) Pandora function by pressing and holding the left button.  it will not let me see the app screen so I can check the weather or anything else on the watch.  I have to not only pause the exercise but I have to end the exercise to be able to look at any other function ie: weather, settings, alarm.  Is this normal?

Yep.  Unfortunately that is how this device works.

Really there is no need to suffer in Frustration - simply call Tech Support at 877-623-4997 and get your Ionic replaced right now while you can
Many have followed this straightforward advice and now have a replacement Ionic - we all should have “zero tolerance” for any defective Ionic
