Can fitbit ionic be used to swim on the beach, and could the ionic be damaged because of being submerged in water?

It will be fine in sea water, and being submerged over time is not a problem. I am not sure if it will track open water swimming though as I think it is similar to the flex 2 in that it counts laps to know how far you have gone.
