Just saw an email to developers which seems to allude to the app gallery opening sometime later this month. Fitbit has a number of contests for developers to encourage apps in three categories including:
Sports + Fitness
Health + Wellness
Transportation + Local
Looking forward to the new apps and clock faces. The couple I’ve seen are really creative!

Looking forward to this! No category for audio (music, podcasts, audio books, etc)?

I would love a decent podcast app. Oh, and an Audible app too!

In addition to there being no APIs, there's no way for apps to use WiFi, so you'd have to sync music over Bluetooth which would take forever. And apps don't have enough storage space to store podcasts or music.
Those of you who'd like to see audio-related apps should suggest them in the Feature Suggestions forum.

I had a comment, but it was deleted. Apparently I can not be facetious and get away with it here. I would really like to see a calendar app. I tried a S3 prior to buying the Ionic and the one app they had that I really liked was the calendar. In my job I need to be able to check which day a specific date falls on in the next month or two and having the ability to do that on my wrist was most helpful.

So I saw where the app development contest doesn't end until December 15th. So, thinking the app store won't open until after that. Any thoughts? Have you heard anything different?

According to the link above, the last section of the contest ends with App Grand Champ announced on December 22. My understanding is the app challenge is for anyone out there who can make an app.
Fitbit obviously has their own app developers, who did the apps that came installed on the Ionic. I don't see why the app store opening would be dependent on the contest ending, if the Fitbit developers are ready. But I have no idea when that date will be.

Fitbit needs to be smart about this; with Black Friday a week away...you would think they would want to create some positive press and excitement (you know, for sales)...by releasing the App Gallery before then. Just saying...
