I have a rather new Iconic that will not respond as though the battery is dead but the app indicates it is fully charged.

The app only knows the charge level as it was when it last synced so may be out of date. Does the ionic show any life when you plug it in to charge?

It shows no life when plugged in.

I guess there are 2 reasons for that. Either the charging is not working and it has just run out of battery, or it's defective.

I would try another USB power source e.g. a wall charger used for your phone and if that doesn't work then it's probably time to contact customer support to check your warranty status and consider your options: contact.fitbit.com

The same thing happened to my Ionic.  Try to press and hold the left and bottom right buttons until you see the fitbit logo.
