I've come to rely on the Windows 10 app telling me when my Ionic battery is low, but twice in the last couple of weeks my device just went dead, no visible warning and no further tracking. At least my old Charge2 would keep tracking for a day or so after the display went dead, and the data was not lost. What's the deal with notifications?

I never go by the indicator on the app as that only shows your battery as of your last sync. As @USAF-Larry mentioned, you can check the battery level by swiping left on your watch.

@Babbo302, I am not sure why you aren't seeing the notifications - you should get them when you sync your tracker to the PC. But, in the meanwhile, periodically scroll to the screen left of the clock and check the battery level on the Ionic. I usually put mine on the charger when it shows around 40% or less just to make sure I don't let it go dead at the most inconvenient time.

To add to what @USAF-Larry and @DramaQueenDiva have said, you will get the best long term life out of your Ionic battery by avoiding deep discharges whenever possible. Recharging once you get below 40 or 30 % will not only make sure your Fitbit does not cut out when it is least convenient, it will also keep your battery in top shape to last the longest.
Best practice: keep an eye on the battery meter on the device itself, and give it a boost before it goes below 30%. Alternatively, give it a few minutes every day -- for example when you take it off to shower (not necessary, but it gives your wrist a rest and you probably are not taking many steps...). A brief charging boost every day should mean that you never have to worry about it running out of charge.
