I have to hit the button every time I want to see the time. Why doesn't my fit bit show the time when I shake my wrist or turn my wrist?

Press and hold the left button. A menu will appear for "Wake Screen" and "Notofications".
Tap the screen to set "screen Wake" to "Auto" instead of Manual.

Thank you so so much for your response. Sadly it does not help.
When I press and hold the left button, I only get my the unlock screen for my
credit card on file.
I also checked settings and cannot find any setting for wake screen.
Other suggestions??

A warm welcome to the Community @SunsetRunner. Let me help you setting up the wake settings in your Ionic.
Thanks for the tips that you mentioned @DonLWms. If you're not getting the wake screen settings when you press and hold the left button, it might be because your Ionic doesn't have the latest firmware version. You can double check the firmware version that you have by going into your Ionic's settings > about > version.
After you have the latest version, then press and hold the left button and adjust the screen wake settings.
I'll be around if you need further assistance.

Thanks again for your continued response. I think you are right that this must
be a setting problem. I do have the latest firmware.
I am wondering if this is a problem because I use the wallet. When I press and
hold the left button, the only option I have is to unlock my wallet.
Any other suggestions?

This happens to me. I uninstalled the Fitbit app on my I pad then reinstalled. I then did update. Worked after that.

@SunsetRunner after holding in the button, and going to the unlock code, swipe left to get to settings or swipe right for music control.
