My fitbit is under counting laps when I'm swimming

I have my fitbit set for 12 meters and the time 15 minutes+. Yesterday 1 swam over fifty laps but the Fitbit only counted 26 laps. A week ago I swam 100 laps but the Fitbit only counted 84 laps. This is my second Ionic the previous one was counting accurately before it died on me.

Hi @Franciscus, nice to see you around. I'm glad to see that you're using your Fitbit Ionic to track your swimming workouts.

Thanks for the details on your post. Sorry to hear about your missing laps. In this case, I'd like to check some basic information with you.

While you can choose to swim using any of the 4 most common strokes (freestyle, backstroke, breaststroke, and butterfly), we recommend swimming freestyle for the best results. Your device records your swims even if you’re a novice swimmer, meaning you can swim about 6 to 12 lengths of the pool without stopping to rest. If you’re unable to swim this distance, you may notice inconsistencies in your swim data including some lengths not counted. As your swimming ability improves, you’ll likely notice fewer inconsistencies in your data.

In addition to completing only a handful of laps or stopping to rest often, inconsistencies in your swim data may be caused by any of the following:

  • Stopping to rest midway across the pool
  • Resting for longer than 60 seconds after completing a pool length
  • Changing stroke type midway across the pool
  • Swimming with a kickboard or not using your hands
  • Swimming less than the minimum duration set to be auto-recognized
  • The units for the pool length setting don't match the units you use for your Fitbit settings. For example if you measure length in feet and inches, and specify a pool length in meters. For more information, see How do I update my Fitbit settings?

After checking all those details, I'd suggest restarting your Ionic in case that this is having internal issues to track your data. Then give it a try a couple of more swimming sessions to confirm that it is tracking the correct information.

Hope this helps.

Thanks for your help, it's much appreciated. I am a reasonably good swimmer. This is my second Ionic fitbit  my first Ionic  fitbit always dropped one lap off but no more. It is a mystery to me what was happening but for some reason it seemed to have fixed itself up because my last swim the Fitbit counted correctly, but it did drop off one lap like my last fitbit did. Thanks Yojana and Kind Regards Franciscus

Mine is counting more laps than I swim.

When I swim 2 lengths it counts 7.

In 5 min 350 mtrs. They have now accepted the issue and "Working" on it ..
