Had the ionic for 5 days and here are the top 2 annoyances I have found.
1. The tilt wrist to view time doesn’t always work and sometimes there is a delay with the display appearing. The Pebble watch shake gesture would be a good option to include (please?)
2. Notifications don’t illuminate the Ionic screen. You have to manually get the screen up to view notifications. It would be great to include a feature to illuminate the watch face when notifications are received so you can glance without interacting. If your hands are full you can’t glance to read your notifications because they are not displayed....... This goes for phone calls too - I want to be able to see who is calling in a meeting and reject the call with canned message responses. (Please?)
The watch will take a huge step in user experience if the above points could be addressed.

To each their own. Fitbit cannot make everyone happy here. I don't want.... And I am very happy that I cannot reply with canned messages. I don't want to reply on my wrist.... I am glad that Fitbit kept the focus on the Ionic be a fitness watch first.
I am also glad a text does not light up a sleeping screen. Then it would be like the apple, phone, where a locked phone shows messages that might likely be personal, and others could see. It would also light up during sleep too.
As far as the wrist turn, it was the same with the Charge HR and Blaze. It needs to sense the lift and turn. The is no absolute fix for this, that would work 100% of the time.

Agreed, this is all very much the standard operating mechanism for Fitbit devices and has been for a while now. Things may evolve over time but I wouldn’t hold out to see these changes any time soon. Sorry.

I would like to see the Ionic function just as you have described. It shouldn't operate just like every other Fitbit, they made a big deal about this being a smartwatch and it needs to work like a smartwatch. I am seriously surprised it doesn't really have any of the software functionality that the Pebble had.

Great to see Fitbit has a loyal, active and collaborative community. I am looking forward to Fitbit advancing in the smart wearables space with a strong foundation in fitness tracking.
I don’t suggest that the features mentioned would be for everyone. But feel they should be options if Fitbit is to be a real smartwatch challenger.
To compete, Fitbit need to mature in the smart watch stakes or die. Blackberry had a strong community , were a market leader , they failed to innovate and they lost the smart device market. I would caution turning a blind eye to user suggested features as these are just expected in the smart wearables market. To differentiate by not doing some basic things , like Apple Watch (and Pebble which Fitbit acquired), is like BlackBerry holding onto physical QWERTY keyboards and not adapting to the market.
If the Ionic, and subsequent releases, fail I predict Fitbit will be dead in 3 years with a few niche loyalists clinging to the product like crackberry fans hanging onto the nostalgic BlackBerry keyboard. A survival pivot to Android wearables with Fitbit apps, like BlackBerry’s move, would be the next likely move on the slippery slope to try and remain relevant and maintain access to an engaged developer community.
This is only the start of the journey. I hope Fitbit don’t fail. I hope Fitbit do innovate beyond the competition and do engage the market effectively to win the prime spot on everyone’s wrist. Otherwise, my Ionic will end up like HP’s webOS..... or BlackBerry’s playbook.

This could be done as a preference. You can have it your way and the original poster (Shibboleth) can have it theirs. Their original complaint about the tilt often not working is my problem as well. I like the idea of having an option for this. As you pointed out, you don't always want your phone going one when you are not wanting distractions.

I would be happy with 'most of the time', but my Ionic never shows the time when I raise and twist my wrist. How do I fix such a basic function?

@SunsetRunner Make sure you’ve got the “Screen Wake” setting on Auto not Manual. You can check by swiping left to right on the clock screen.

Thanks. I have to wonder why the default setting isn’t on auto.
Cheers

BTW I’m trying to hook up headphones. It says to go to Settings on my watch but I can’t find them anywhere. I assume it’s something simple???? Thanks

If you’re trying to pair them, yes, you need to go to Settings. Swipe Right to Left till the Settings icon, tap on it, scroll up to Bluetooth and it should say “Connect to headphones”. Tap on that and it’ll say “+New Device”. Tap on that and it’ll search for your headphones.
