Now my Ionic won't stop showing that I'm running even when off the wrist

I had a problem last week that went away (seems left button screen kept showing over and over).

 

Now, the watch seems fine except it is showing the step count skyrocketing.  And the stair flights goes up and up.  Tried everything I can think of short of a factory reset.  Let's try that.

...sigh...

Well, that is an hour of life I will never get back.  A factory reset has been useless.  Step count is going up like I'm strutting at a fast pace while I sit here typing.

 

Any ideas?  Am I experiencing a different variant of the infamous update in August?

Clearly, this Ionic is not functioning correctly.  I have not worn in on my wrist since factory reset, new set up, and reacquiring the connection to my Pixel 2XL, yet it shows my heart rate is in the cardio zone and I have done 676 minutes of effort and walked 3 and 3/4 miles, done 7600 steps.
