Really odd heart rate tracking whilst running

Hi All - I'm experiencing a very odd problem with the heart rate tracking on my Ionic. When I'm on a run the device records my heart rate gradually increasing for about 15 minutes. It then records a drop by about 40-50bpm for about 5 minutes before returning to the trajectory I would have expected had the drop not occured. I'm good at running at a consistent pace so I'm certain its the device and not my body!

I've been in touch with fitbit who have been suggesting lots of different options (wear the device further up the wrist etc.) but nothing is working.

Has anyone experienced anything similar? I've included an example pic below

@mancrunner, I've seen graphs like that when I run, it virtually always means I forgot to tighten my strap down one or two notches; I typically wear my Ionic on either the fourth or fifth notch, but need to use the third notch when running to avoid an artificially high heart rate.
