Replace or add new device

I started off with a Surge, and now have an Ionic (and looking to get a replacement ionic as the first stopped syncing)  I'm keen to know the different between adding a new device or choosing to "replace".  I am concerned about losing old data -When trying to sort issues with the Ionic, which I added as a new device I removed the Surge, only to find all old data had gone from the ap.

Mostly thinking of when my Ionic gets replaced am I best to choose replace against the original Ionic, Or will it still wipe data and instead choose "add new device"?

Galaxy S5, Surge, Ionic

Fitbit allows us to have multiple trackers connected to our account but they have to be of different types so, for example, you can have a Surge and Ionic connected but can't have two ionics.

When you add a new device to your account it checks your current trackers. If you don't have a tracker of that type then it just goes ahead and adds it. If you already have that type of tracker connected then it asks if you want to replace it. Not sure why it asks as it's the only option you have.

When you replace a tracker it does just that - disconnects the old one and connects the new. Any data previously synced should not be affected by this as it's all held on the fitbit servers. The only data at risk is any unsynced data on the old fitbit which will be lost during this process.

I can't understand why you lost data previously. It certainly shouldn't work that way and I have used the replacement process without issue.
