I am a long time Fitbit user (Charge, Charge HR, Blaze). About 2 weeks ago, I bought a Vivoactive 3. My primary reasons for purchasing the Vivoactive over the Ionic were:
Within a week of using the Vivoactive 3, I noticed that the heart rate monitor would flat line at 80 while I was working out. Then all of a sudden it would go to the correct heart rate. If this happened on my Blaze, I would have to move it up my arm or tighten the wristband. But nothing fixed the issue on the Vivoactive. A check on the Garmin forum confirmed that this is an issue. Apparently this has been an issue for months with no timetable to resolve this issue. This was a complete deal breaker for me. I returned the Vivoactive and went back to my Blaze. Hopefully the golf app will finally be fixed on Ionic so I can purchase it.
Other users on the forum noted there are battery life issues but I didn't see that issue. It lasted about 4-5 days.

All the issues with smartwatches reminds me of all the trouble my roommate had with his first Droid back in '07. He was basically pulling his hair out with all the bugs. Crazy the speed at which technology moves...

Thanks for your info. I was thinking about Vivoactive 3 and Fitbit too. However, I finally bought the IONIC and well I sold it to my friend soon after that. As IONIC couldn't get the right Cal burned. Then instead of Vivo Active 3, I tried SUUNTO Sport Wrist HR but with some reason I returned it. Then purchased the lower model and another IONIC. So I have 2 watches, SUUNTO will be wearing when I go to Gym while Fitbit becomes my everyday watch.
SUUNTO is about the same as Garmin but HR and GPS are more precise. While IONIC, for me, is more on smart watch. I have compared Cal burned between SUUNTO and IONIC, They were greatly different though.
However, I like my IONIC but just ignore the cal burned, I use it for everyday tracker.
