Do you have to buy the flyer headphones to pair headphones with the watch or will other brands pair?

I am having a similar problem, I connected with my Powerbeats bluetooth wireless headphones and get no sound.  I tried increasing from the Ionic and from the button on the earbuids and nothing.

Seems like it will work with any Bluetooth headset. See below excerpt from the following page on Fitbit's product help site: "You can bring music and audio coaching on your Ionic watch to life by connecting it to wireless Bluetooth headphones like Fitbit Flyer." https://community.fitbit.com/t5/Ionic/All-About-Fitbit-Ionic/m-p/2121495 It is probably advisable to see if it only supports certain (later) versions of Bluetooth (i.e. 4.x and higher)?

Yes, you just need to make sure the headset supports Bluetooth low energy (4.0).

Doesn't look too easy right now, this is from a review:

I paired my watch with the new Fitbit Flyer wireless earphones that the company launched in tandem. My impressions of that device are in a separate hands-on here, but suffice it to say that connecting the two gadgets was a cinch. Trying to link third-party Bluetooth headphones was more complicated -- there was no menu on the watch nor on the iOS app to connect.

It took me some time to understand how to navigate some of the apps. Although you can get by with tapping and swiping, for the most part, you'll have to use the two physical buttons on the right of the watch face to launch and end workouts. The single button on the left lets you exit apps or go back to the home screen. It's meant to prevent you from accidentally starting a workout, but the combination of long presses and choosing between top or bottom buttons left me confused. Still, this is something I can see myself getting used to over time.

Pairing with the Apple Airpods was a cinch, and the Airpods are so much cooler than the Flyer.  There is currently a problem with adjusting volume of Airpods though.

I have a pair of skybuds that work great with it.  I haven't tried my others.

I just paired my magicbud headphones to ionic with ease.  The only thing to note is that if the same headphones are connected to your phone, you may have to turn off bluetooth on your phone for the pairing to be successful to ionic.

I connected with my cheap $25 wireless headphones I got on Amazon.  Piece of cake.

are you able to control the volume if you are playing music off your watch only?

That’s the nature of Bluetooth “classic”, it only allows one active connection. So if your phone is paired first it holds the connection. The headphones won’t look for another connection until the one with the phone is dropped. It’s the same with a lot of headphones and speakers.

Thank you! This helped. Now to figuring out how to get the music piece done.

@macamllion13, yes you can. Tap on the current song that's playing, and you'll see that song in full screen. In the upper left corner, tap the button. On the next screen you'll see the volume buttons on the right.

You can control your volume, skip track and rewind track from your watch. If you have the same controls on your earphones you can do the same from them too. Hope that helps

Not just the Apple AirPods.

Contacted fitbit and was brushed off. If you look on the iconic thread there are several people with this problem.

Also the latest firmware update did nothing to address this problem.

Thank you so much, i have the Jaybird x3 headphones and iconic couldn't find them until i unpaired the headphones from my phone. After the connection was made between headphones and the watch i was able to pair with the phone again and everything works fine.

When doing water workout with Ionic and fitbit flyer, the music cuts out whenever my hand goes under the water.  Is there something I'm missing or am I not going to be able to wear this while working out in the pool.
