Watch "grays" out while in exercise mode?

When I have my Ionic in "Workout" mode, it sometimes shows all the numbers grayed out.  Usually they are in color and the Heart picture is beating in red and shows my HR in color.  What does it mean when it's all in gray?  It looks like it is still reading my HR so I don't get why it's doing that?

its not reading your heart rate correctly when shown in grey font
