What is the purpose of "Open"?

I noticed recently as I receive Facebook and/or Text/Kik messaging in addition to "Reply", or "Clear" there is now an "Open".  Which, does absolutely nothing.  What is the purpose of that?

Since the Ionic is unable to reply to those apps, open simlly tells the phone to open the app so that the user may reply using the phone.
