Will this watch work with the Dexcom G5 system and the user will be able to view their glucose levels on the watch itself in real time or will the watch only get notifications from the app if glucose levels go too high or too low?

@SatansWingMan, the Fitbit Ionic is not a medical device, and will not have the capability to connect to the Dexcom G5 app on the Android phone. If the Dexcom G5 app had the capability to send you a text message regarding high or low readings, you could get those text notifications on the Ionic, but the Ionic would not have any capability to use the Dexcom Follow app to monitor the glucose readings.

It looks like the answer is yes, but I'll defer to the experts.

If I purchase the Ionic now, when the integration with Dexcom occurs, will it be a firmware upgrade, or am I better off waiting until the integration occurs to purchase?

You must have the Dexcom G5 Mobile sensor implanted under your skin. Starting with 2018, Ionic will be able to read and display the information provided by the implanted sensor.

Bumping this up in hopes that a Fitbit employee may be able to answer these questions. So far, the rumors appear to be that the integration won't take place until 2018. My question is, once there is integration, will it be a firmware update? Not sure if I should buy now or hold off until the integration with Dexcom is in place.

I think Nightscout will be out by the time the store opens. #wearenotwaiting. I am currently watching the devleoper's friend's bgs on my wrist. He is chatting on Discord if interested.

I think it will come as an app, if you were familiar with pebble, not firmware, the firmware already supports multiple bluetooth connections.

Dexcom on the iWatch shows numbers in real time. It is the oily reason I no longer have a fitbit.

I think this link explains a lot:
Fitbit is likely working to integrate with this rather than Dexcom at this point. And I think the main issue is that Fitbit did not use the Android Wear O/S for Ionic, but developed their own. Since Dexcom is a medical device, any changes need to go through FDA approval, which takes a very long time in the US. I know people in Canada and England who have access to new features and upgrades much sooner than we get them in the US, due to the lengthy FDA approval process.
But after reading about Fitbit's investment in this CGM startup, I am thinking the integration with Dexcom likely won't happen, as they will want to focus on integration with the start-up CGM company they just invested in. I guess it is time to give up my Samsung Galaxy for an iPhone and my Fitbit for an Apple Watch.
