With "always connected" enabled, should the Ionic be continually connected to my mobile device?

In my mobile device (Samsung Note 8), I never see that the Ionic is connected in the Bluetooth settings screen.  It lists the Ionic as one of the paired devices, but it is never connected, ever.  Furthermore, when I hit Scan, it finds nothing.

My Ionic stops syncing every day.  I can get it to sync once by fully shutting it down and then restarting it.  It usually requires multiple shutdowns before it will sync once.  However, after that, I never see in my phone's bluetooth settings that the Ionic is connected anymore.  Should I see it connected, or does the phone only briefly connect during a sync, and then disconnect?  It seems that I should see it connected all then table when I have "Always Connected" enabled.

(And, yes, I've gone through that tedious checklist to make sure the Ionic can sync. That ridiculous checklist is FitBit's way of pushing its problems onto its customers.  It shouldn't be so difficult, and one shouldn't have to go through that checklist more than once, let alone daily.)

I have the all day update but not the always connected switched on. What I find is that the data does go to the server because when I check the website dashboard the stats are up to date (within about 30 minutes).  However, when I open the app it takes its time syncing and probably retrieving the data from the servers to show the updated stats.

That sounds like how it is supposed to work.  I would hope that data would eventually get to the server even if you have "always connected" enabled.  Maybe it just briefly connects to your mobile device to sync in your case, or maybe it's uploading to the server via your wifi.  I dunno.

My question is about how the bluetooth status of the Ionic should appear on my mobile device while  "always connected" is enabled.  Should it show "connected" all the time, or is my Ionic malfunctioning?  So far it syncs rarely if at all, and it never shows any notifications, though I've enabled notifications from a few apps.

I'm trying to figure out if this is normal or if I should return the piece of junk.
