poor battery connection

My Ionic looks like it is charging when I have connected it to the charging lead. I walk away and return an hour later to find the dam thing has not charged at all. This is happening more and more frequently. I have checked the connections and they look clean. Often, when its failing to charge, the screen will display a insufficient power to charge warning. This happens when connected to devices such as a plug or laptop and desktop computer that has successfully charged the device before. Any ideas......

Do you clean the metal dust off of the charging cable, and clean the contacts with isopropyl alcohol?

I was using a fitbit iconic charging stand.  I notice lately that it wouldn't charge.  I cleaned everything and still nothing.  I went back to the cable and it now works.  It took a lot of cleaning.  I could see one contact point on the watch was duller than the others.
