For security reason my phone locks every 15minutes. 
When my phone is right next to my watch, it still cannot find my  phone.  Does the phone need to be unlocked before this feature works.

Hello @mablack2016 and welcome to the Community.  Your phone screen can be locked, but your phone's Bluetooth must be on and the Fitbit app must be open or running in the background.

Ok thanks - my blue tooth stays on but lots of time the app gets closed in the background.
I will try it this way.
