Screen too dim when in exercise mode always-on

When I start the run mode with always-on enabled, the screen brightness is good. After about five seconds, the screen dims and gets very difficult to read outdoors while running. How can I increase the brightness of the dimmed screen in run mode? Note: I have tried restarting the device, and I am not in sleep or DND mode. Thanks.
