So, I'm not necissarily looking to lose a whole bunch of weight, but rather keep from gaining a bunch. I've never really done the whole calorie counting thing, I've always played sports growing up, so I've always been in relatively good shape, but pushing late 20's and college dietary habits had a way of ruining that slim 6 pack I used to rock.
To the point, in general, if I want to tone and tighten, in addition to possibly loosing ~10 lbs, is it necessary for me to burn more calories than I intake? if so, the future is dim, I wen't on a 3 mile run today in addition to my regular work day, burned something like 3,000 calories on the day (according to fitbit), but took in about 15000, and it's not even dinner time yet. any advice?

If you're looking to lose weight, then yes, you need to burn more than you eat. If you're looking to just maintain your weight, then you should burn as many calories as you eat.

I don't know how that would be possible - but I would love to try it - provided they can be burned off while I sleep.
