Any diabetics using the FB?

Wondering if there are any diabetics out there who are using the FB and working towards weight loss?  I'm insulin dependent and trying to lose weight but more importantly trying to regain my health and physical strength while balancing everything.  A challenge a day! Love to hear your stories....

Hi All,

 

I have been Type 20 for more than 20 years.. Not on insulin yet; Metformin and Januvia.  I have had very decent sugar control but recently A1cs creeping up in the 7s - a sign my pancreas is producing less insulin or I am becoming more resistant or both...

 

I have done a ton  of reading over the years and experimented with a variety of things.  My weight has been a constant struggle my whole life.  I have been from overweight, to very overweight, to tip top physical condition (During my time in the military and usually somewhere in-between) At no time when I was in top shape was it easy.  It required constant exercise  and and my eating nearly nothing to stay in shape (I was probably eating the wrong things at the time)  By the way, none of us are dealt the same hand.  I had a roomate in college that ate whatever he wanted and never gained any weight. (I still hate him)

 

Here's a few things I have learned:

 

Exercise trumps dieting - Even if it is a few extra steps a day; walking; parking farther away from where you would normally park, taking a minute to walk around a block - It makes a difference.  It doesn't have to be an event, just get started, listen to some music.  The fitbit helps setting a goal and tracking it.

 

Focusing on adding in good foods vs. not eating bad foods is the key.  Instead of obsessing about what not to eat, I made sure to add in good foods.  I like spinach so I have big spinach salads daily.  This isn't a hardship because I like them.  They fill me up and I am less apt to eat something else 🙂  I eat the salad first.

 

I'm very focused now on looking for foods high in nutriants and not filled with empty calories; no high fructose corn syrup, MSG, trans fats, bleached, hydroginated.  I'm also limiting meat and dairy (Dairy is actually full of sugar - lactose) I like almond milk and use that. It sounds like a big change but you can get here gradually.

 

I am a fan of Dr.Joel Furhman and some of the work he has done (Eat to Live, The End of Diabetes, etc.)  One of his tips that my wife and I have used is making a big batch of healthy soup or stew.  We vacuum pack this and freeze it then just thaw out some when we come home from work. it helps with the challenge of trying to prepare something decent every night.

 

I'm in a pitched battle now to stay off insulin.  I'm just not ready to go there yet.  I want to see if I can increase my activity further, lose a few more pounds and stay off a few years longer or all together.  Wish me luck and best to all of you.  We have a crappy disease but you don't have to give into it.  Fight it!

 

By the way, I was diagnosed while serving in the US Army.  During my exit physical my sugars were elevated and revealed I was "pre-diabetetic," a term I wish the medical community would abolish and I wish I knew then what I know now.  Anyway, I was in the shape of my life and very active so while activity level and BMI are factors with type II diabetes so is family history and genetics.  My point is none of us deserve this.  Sometimes, I think the general public has an interesting view of diabetics but maybe that's just me.  🙂

Hi Laura!

 

I was diagnosed in 2010 with Type 2 diabetes.  I've not really taken care of myself and take a daily shot, a weekly shot, and a daily pill.  Two months ago at my last endocronologist appointment, I was told my liver is not functioning properly.  He told me to lose weight to help my liver.  I started using MyFitnessPal to log all my food and just got my FB a couple of weeks ago.  In the two months since this appointment, I've been able to lose 15.4 lbs.  I love my FB!!  It really helps me!

I was diagnosed as hypo glycemic at the age of 19.  So I always had to watch my sugar.  Unfortunatly I never watched my weight. 

 

I was diagnosed as Type 2 in 2005 at the age of 42.  I was prescribed Victoza.  My AIC were in the 5.6-5.9 range.  All well and good, except I realized that I would crash whenever I would spend time in the sun.  Recently I stopped going to my endocrinologist and am having my gp handle my diabetes, because my endo is 45 minutes away and my new office hourse 5:30 am to 6 pm makes it impossible to get there.  Due to insurance changes Victoza is in a different tier and the copays are no longer affordable.  I was just put on Januvia (without Metformin as I'm allergic) and I found that my sugars were much higher.

 

I purchased the fitbit charge hr as a birthday present to myself. And I am doing well with it.  I keep trying to do a little more today then the day before, but I am still finding that my sugar goes down after spending time in the sun.  Does anyone else have this problem?

Are you staying well hydrated while in the sun?  I live close to the beach, so I spend loads of time out in the sun.  My levels don't drop from that, but exercise does make my levels drop.  The only correlation I can come up with is the sweat factor from being in the sun or exercising.

BTW --- I'm allergic to Metformin too!  You're the only other person I've run into that is also allergic to it!

Yes, I am doing great on my water.  I am also on MyFitnesPal and it is a great tracker for water.  The doctors have no idea why my sugar keeps dropping when I am out in the sun.

There has to be more of us.  What medication are you on? I loved the Victoza, not to happy with the Januvia.

Well on this forum there is lots of support for Permanent Lifestyle change in eating and exercise. The general population is not well educated at all. We have to expect dumb remarks and we can inform them otherwise. For those people who are able to get off Meds. and their pancreas functions and their cells stop being insulin resistance let's give a cheer.  It is important to have supportive friends and accurate information. I love Dr. Joel Fuhrman's End to Diabetes book. It is worth a good read. 

 

I think many MDs give awful info  to patients.  They don't expect them to get fasting glucose to under 100. Many seem to tell their pts. that that only need be under 120 fasting.

Vitamin D is supplied by the sun. Have you good blood levels of vit. D like 40+?. It might be smart to take 5000 IU of D a day and see if that helps lower you BG. 

Exercise, eat piles of non starchy veggies and control simple carbs and sugars. More diet and exercise control leads to weight loss and lower BG then maybe less meds. and fewer side effects.

I take Lantus and Farxiga every day and Budureon once a week.  I'm hoping to be able to drop the Lantus when I go back to the endo at the end of June.

My doctor has me on 50,000 a week. I just elevated my vitamin D into the
normal ranges a month ago.

Dr Jaon Fung in Toronto Canada is reversing T2D with his unique dietary message.  I am following his advice and have lost 19 lbs. since March 1.  Husband has lost 32 lbs and is no longer taking diabetic medications.  His A1C is just .2 from being non diabetic.

Metformin has side effects which effect me.  It gives me diarrhea which is at times uncontrollable  --  embarassing!  I would not say it is an allergy though.

I was vegan (along with my husband) for 2 years, neither of us reversed our diabetes.

Have you tried taking it with food? I literally eat something 5 minutes before I take it and I have no issues. If I don't, I have the same problems. My usual "metformin snack" is 1 Oz of peanuts.

The FDA published a warning about diabetic medicine that it could form a higher level of blood acid.

Lew this is not quite correct.  Metformin is mixed with a couple of the drugs mentioned in the warning just as it is in other treatments.

 

For example, I take Janumet which is a combination of Metformin and Januvia.

 

Metformin is probably the most widely prescribed drug for the treatment of Type 2 since the 1940s with the chief danger being the possibility of Lactic Acidosis , a buildup of lactatate in the blood which can be caused by a variety of triggers.  This has been on the warning label for a long time.
