Any diabetics using the FB?

Wondering if there are any diabetics out there who are using the FB and working towards weight loss?  I'm insulin dependent and trying to lose weight but more importantly trying to regain my health and physical strength while balancing everything.  A challenge a day! Love to hear your stories....

Hi everyone,

I am pretty newly diagnosed with Type 2 (April 30, 2015) but so far I have lost 36.7 lbs and walk mostly 11K steps or more per day. Recently started Tai Chi as well because I am a little uptight over the diagnosis and potential complications...(understatement) I am 61 yrs old.

I take Metformin 500mg twice a day. Now my BP is normal/optimal and my HgA1C is 5.8 in end of June and due for another end of September and I suspect it might be lower.

As far as diet, I saw a dietician and attended the classes and then read what I could. I cut my carbs to around 130 per day. Feeling quite good by following a good diet with little to no simple carbs though plenty of complex ones..I try and stick to the ratios on Myfitnesspal and always track my meals. I feel satisfied eating although I am starving at meal times..

Hope everyone is doing well and I hope to learn from others with diabetes. 🙂

Hi @FrenchieMama. TaiChi is something I would love to learn. I love meditation and anything desiigned to help chill out as well as excercise and walking.

Good luck with the weight loss and keeping your blood sugar under control. Joining in discussions on here and the fitbit challenges is certainly motivating.

Thanks for friending me 🙂 I am going to Tai Chi again tonight. It's moving meditation. They say you don't have to think about the 108 moves...your body will remember it. It's beautiful to watch them do a set!! Trying to get as fit and healthy as I can!! It's not easy but I am committed to it. I hope I keep my motivation up.

@FrenchieMama I have done water Tai Chi.  It was lovely.  I also do yoga and spring forest qi gong.  They are my favorite ways to exercise because they harmonize the body and mind!  Have a wonderful time tonight!  Welcome in here!  This is a really great bunch of people!

I love warm water exercise of any kind because it is so gentle on your joints!  However, it seems to be very hard to find places that filter their warm water and keep out all the bacteria that can get in there.  And I get infections from that very easily...Hence, I am doing steps and more yoga etc. at home.  The peace and quiet these meditative branches of exercise give me are what is most important to me.  I hope you find them equally peaceful!

Have a great day everybody!

I teach swimming at least 3x's a week. Water is the best. If it is cold, just jog fast and you will warm up in 3 mins and feel fine.

@anrento  Woha!  You assume far too much here.  I can't jog anywhere (not even in water)!  My joints freeze up really bad.  That's why warm water is so good.  But I have heard that the YMCA offers warm water exercise too so I'm going to investigate that too.  I know they offer yoga.....  In the mean time I will put one step in front of the other........Smiley Happy

I am pre-Diabetic was 6.2 at the doorstep to Diabetes and moved down 2 points to 6.0. For me it took me a good year to move thoses numbers. I lost 30 lbs and became more active with FB plus tracking my food religiously with my fitness pal which can be connected to FB. You are welcom to be my FB friend. I 'm just a girl that can't say no to friendship.

@Jerseysmom You are in a tough position for sure!  I don't know what kind of daily routine you are in right now or what kind of exercise you can do, but if you don't get a daily walk in I would really consider it.  When the weather is bad, I walk around my house or I go to the mall or I take my dog to the pet  shop and we walk around there.  I hope you can find something that works for you.  An A1C of 11.6 is so high!  I know that it sounds bad too, but on the bright side, you should see it go down pretty quickly if you can add exercise.  If you are already exercising, I recommend seeing a diabetic dietician to see if he or she can help you make better food choices.  Also, you may need to see a diabetic specialist.  My heart goes out to you!  Please keep in touch here and let us know how you fare.

Highest I ever went with sugar count for my A1C was 8 and my doctor was all over me for it. Completely have to blame myself. I made the wrong food choices and
never bothered to exercise. I also went back to the diabetic classes to refresh my memory . I did lose 45 pds. (still want to lose 30 more). Doing the right food choices
was 80% of my problem. Completely left soda/pop behind . Use to drink a liter a day. I don’t miss it. Flavor Water I drink 8 glasses a day.

Whole wheat bread and potatoes only before noon. For some reason my sugar shots up in the evening if I do eat them. I couldn’t give up my bread and potatoes.
Fruits took the place of candy. I try to eat vegs. but I am not crazy about green vegs. Wish I could . If you can, eat them as much as you want. They are healthy.

I refuse to have donuts, candy , potato chips in my house. If my husband buys them I make him take them somewhere and hide them. I can’t eat just one.
My craving for those things hasn’t went away.

What we are saying you have to watch what you consume. No one in your house will baby sit you. Only you can make a difference .

I too walk in my house and maybe the neighborhood, parks, trails, malls, stores.

Please let us all know how you are coming alone. My husband says I sound like an x smoker always lecturing about diabetes. I can’t help it. LOL

William Davis wrote a book on wheat and belly fat. I am prebiabetic and was able to come down 2 points in the A!C. It took me a year.Try to stay way from wheat products. I use the german heavy rye bread. Davis said wheat sparks your appetite. Take a look at his concepts.

Hi,  I am new to loseit.  I was a member a few years ago but never took it seriously.  I have rejoined a couple of months ago.  I love my fitbit it helps me to keep moving.  I have been Diabetic since I was a teenager.  So I have had it for 40+ years.  I wear an insulin pump.  Also love the pump.  Looking for friends on Loseit.  I have lost 18lbs.  Hoping to lose another 18.

Wheat belly diet.  I have that book and his DVD's and his cook book.  They are all very good.  There are many diets out there that are good for diabetics.  I suggest trying them until you find what works for you.  Because thre are so many places in your body that produce (or not) insulin and because we are all individuals what works for one of us may not work for all of us.  But keep trying and you will find one that suits you eventually.  I find a supportive informed dietician really helps too.  Keep trying and sharing with us here.  We all learn from eachother.

You've made an excellent start!  I believe any A1c under 6.0 is a job well done.  🙂  I did pretty much what you did:  lost around 40 pounds in the first four months, then slid a little, and didn't lose much more until the following year, but the change in my energy level was profound.  I've since lost another 35 pounds, and at 67 I can run rings around people half my age.  I work out twice a day now, getting around 13-15,000 steps a day, but I started out with only 7-8,000, so that didn't happen overnight.

I've been Type 2 for15  years now, and I sometimes think it was a blessing.  I'm healthier and happier now than I was 15 years ago, and I feel comfident that you'll discover the same thing for yourself.  Maybe not a blessing, but at least a good kick in the pants.  🙂  Be well, and keep walking!

Insulin pumps are a wonderful tool!  My neice has had type 1 diabetes for years and her blood sugars were way out of control.  My hybby (he works for an insulin pump company)  and I finally convinced her to use a pump and oh my the positive changes in her are amazing.  She lost weight, her hair grew back in, her skin cleared up and looks really healthy.  What a difference!

Hi Tracy, I too am taking the pills I've been a diabetic for quite a while, Since the fitbit I've been more into

exercising. My daughter lives in Phoenix AZ and I live in MA. She had one first and motivated me to get one, She's in great shape like I used to be, she's 33, I'm overweight and 61, but since Ive gotten this I love it. I have a treadmill and a recumbent bike so I have no excuse not to exercise. No more excusses for me,

I'm sure you'll do great it's a long road, but take one step at a time.

Holy cow. I was at my hair cutter's today and she told me that she has high sugar level but when she was told that last year the doctor didn't give her any info. other than she is borderline! Eeek. I spent the time during the haircut to tell her how serious it is to change her high carb and sugar diet immediately. I told her about the many complications and she said I was scaring her. I said that I wanted to scare her into acting by changing her diet. She eats lots of chips, chocolate and bread and doesn't exercise except to clean house and run errands. I encouraged her to see her Dr. and ask for information and an A1c test and a referral to a dietitian.

You know the drill. She asked me to write down some website info. that she said she would check out.

For me a fire is burning in a corner of the house and she can put it out or be consumed by it.

So Jeri I know what you mean. I felt like a fire fighter.

Best to everyone in winning the fight,

Barbara
