I did the diet 2 years ago with great success. At the end I absolutely hated it. I hated the food choices and the lack of conveniences. I didn't like the way my body looked because I didn't exercise as I was losing.
Then I gradually started gaining the weight back. Same old story. But...I started thinking about it and the truth was I lost pretty quick and I was healthy. I doubt I can live on this diet but I can sort of do it. Why do we always think everything has to be black and white? or am I just rationalizing not sticking to it 100%
I found a site called dietdirect and I've been ordering what I believe to be the same product from there instead of going back to the center. I'm trying to stick close to the plan without what I felt was the over top strictness. In January I'll create a new work out plan and stick with that, meanwhile I'm just concentrating on keeping my steps at a fairly respectable number.
Anyone here who can relate?

Just started it. I notice it seems to be very low carb on fitbit.com and it says I should only loose 1 lb aweek on the fitbit website.
Did you go through the maitnence part of the program.
How much did you loose and in what priod of time?
Did you exercise?

HI,
I had followed it for about 10 months. I lost my weight without exercising. I ended up changing my goal weight because I started looking a little haggard and since I wasn't exercising I looked flabby. I was in good health, my blood work came back terrific. I found it very strict and in the end I was miserable on it. I was nearly impossible to go out to eat and cooking started becoming a real chore. It's a shame...I wish I could find a way to do the diet without it being so strict....I was actually thinking of going back on it for awhile just because I'm fed up with some stubborn weight....but I haven't been able to bring myself to commit.

Yep, diet without exercise, especially lifting - just makes smaller version of current self.
So if flabby now, you'll just end up skinny fat.
And lifting at the start as beginner when you actually have extra fat to spare is the ONLY time in a diet you'll be able to actually gain muscle mass.
After you've done it a bit, and less fat, you won't while in a diet, you'll have to wait until you can eat in surplus and be willing to gain some fat with the muscle.

Also, I am doing total meal replacement. Bar and Protein Drink for breakfast, lunch and dinner. Fitbit.com says I should only loose 1.6 lbs a week. It seems like I should lose more.

What is skinny fat?

I lost 20 lbs. In the beginning I lost it quickly but then it became painfully slow. When I asked about it they told me that since I was so close to my goal it was natural for it to slow down. Which made sticking to a really restrictive diet even more difficult.

I think fitbit just figures the numbers whereas this diet should create a bigger burn since you are throwing your body into ketosis.

Did you do total meal replacement with bars and drinks? Did you go through their maitnence program.

Skinny fat is where you have a high bodyfat % still even if weight is healthy range.
That happens because a diet with big deficit and no resistance training (adequate protein helps too but taken care of in this case) is going to have about normal 20% loss of muscle-mass along with the 80% fat loss.
Also called looks good with clothes on - but not naked.
Or standing looks right, but sitting or bending shows up the more than expected fat that is still there.
I'm sure you've seen those arms waving that look normal and average, maybe even thin - but flap in wind like so much fat.
To get out of it - you gotta build up lost muscle - and that's only going to happen with willingness to gain more fat back while lifting seriously to gain muscle mass too. Or multi-year effort of slowly trading fat and muscle with a gain a serious lifting program while maintaining weight.

So can I wait until I loose the weight to start working out and building muscle?

Well sure if you don't mind skinny fat.
And the fact to actually gain muscle you'll have to eat in surplus and gain fat right along with the muscle.
And you'll have to work very hard and very correct to gain 1 lb of muscle in 6-8 weeks, along with probably 3-4 lbs of fat.
Then later you'll diet later to lose just the fat. Called bulking and cutting by body builders.
But do the diet the same way you seem to want to do it now - you'll just lose muscle again.
But if you strength train now - you maintain what you've got and don't slow your metabolism down because of less muscle mass.
You really want to be forced to eat less and less than required because you burned off part of your body that increases metabolism?
Is there some reason, like motivation, that you don't want to workout now? Because motivation rarely comes later. If not inspired to workout now, being lighter doesn't cause it either.

Aerobic exercise is primarily for cardio fitness, it won't prevent muscle loss if you're on a calorie deficit to lose weight.
