Brisk walking heart rate discussion

Hey all you fitbitters, I have been brisk walking and wanted some opinions on my heart rate while doing so. A little about myself I am a 23 year old male 247 pounds and 5'9". I walk 6km at least a day now for a whole weeweek, with some days 10km. After 2km walking at 10minutes/km my hert rate stays around 150-160( cardio range).

My question, is this good for burning fat? After 2kms my shin splints go away and I feel like im on autopilot so i feel like I could be working hardrr but am not sure were thenbest heart rate for me to loose fats is. Any disscusion or questions welcome thank you!

Yes. Your max heart rate would be 197 so don’t go over that. As you become more accustom to exercising, your heart rate will decrease which means it will take more of an effort to reach 150-160.

Think of the “fat burning zone” as the minimum amount of work to burn calories. The fat burning zone doesn’t mean it’s the ideal zone to burn fat.  If you can handle more, then do it.

Hi @LouisLeBail - Several thoughts

  • Whatever you can do to sustain and make habitual your activity level trumps any differences in heart rate.  Whether you are at 140 or 170 is far less important than that you are active every day.
  • If being on autopilot makes it easier to sustain your activity, then I would not increase your intensity.
  • Over the next few months, you will find that your heart rate will decrease for a given level of exercise due to your increased fitness.  At that point, you may wish to step up the intensity.
  • Shin-splints -- I'm suggesting you look into all the ways to avoid them so that you don't have to exercise through pain.

@LouisLeBail hey there and great question. Any increase in heart rate due to activity is a way to burn through calories which results in fat loss which results in weight loss. You also want to be mindful of your diet.. the calories you are consuming and the quality of those calories. with added stress to your body (good stress) you need to fuel it better so it can run in top shape. also consider that during fat loss, there is a probability of muscle loss. as time goes on and you become more accustomed to being active, you may want to invest in some weight lifting time as well. You can actually start small and carry weights while you walk or invest in a weighted vest. Not only will this increase you calorie burn it will begin to strengthen muscles so you are on track when you decide to add in strength training...
