Hi, @Elansc! Your plan is very clear and very impressive. Your determination is an inspiration to me. My calorie intake is not as high as yours, but neither is the distance of my daily walk. Thankfully, this app does a good job telling me how much I could eat on a given day, and that helps a lot. I need to drink more water, though. Thanks for mentioning that.

Keep it up, friend!

Good morning, everybody --

I really want to break into the 150's on this challenge. This means staying focused during a particularly grueling stretch of the school year. So today I commit to logging my food, walking 11,000 steps and drinking at least 6 glasses of water.

Have a good one,

I recently found out I have uncontrolable diabetis.  They put me on a very expensive shot, and another very expensive pill.  I know I NEED to lose weight not only for myself, but for my 5 wonderful grandkids.  I'm 50 years old, and NEED help.  I was one of those lazy people "thinking" I will never get like those FAT people....now I"m one of those!!!  I try to bike alot, but only make it a few miles...but thats a start.  I'm also needing to do this for my oldest grandson, who is 10 and weights almost 200lbs.  I know how mean kids can be, but what kind of grandmother would try to change his eating habits, when I'm struggling myself....SOOOOOO this mamaw is going to change the world.....lol, ok, well maybe not, but its a goal...lol

If you don't mind me asking, and message me if you don't want to post. What size clothing are you in? We are the same height, almost the same age, and weight! Just curious to see what others around my stats are in clothing size wise!

Thanks

My knee and muscles seem to be healing so I can be a little more active to burn more. Sitting resting seems to make me hungry. Still eating healthy food just not burning enough.

I'm in the healthy BMI range but want less belly fat.

We can meet our goals together. We are getting healthier inside and out.

Good for you. Diabetes reversal takes very low carbs and sugars. Get a glycemic chart on line, and eat only low glycemic foods. Free, and eat piles of non starchy veggies, only whole grains cereal and bread and only a tiny bit, lean poultry & fish, no fried food and No soda, booze, juice.  Eat a little whole fruit like an orange.  Have a few nuts for a snack. Diabetes is deadly as it can destroy most orgains including kidneys, heart and eyes.

Exercise burns those carbs so walk, bike, swim and get your grandson to go with you. Give him only healthy food with smaller portions for both of you.

Go to Dr. Fuhrman.com to learn more as he wrote End to Diabetes. Another rescources is American Diabetes Association (ADA). People can reverse type II diabetes if they dedicate themselves fully. Get your Dr. to reccommend a class and nutritionist since Medical insurance often will pay for it. We will support you here.

All the best,

Barbara

I just found this in my email.

Type 2 diabetes is potentially reversible via an 8-week, very low-calorie diet followed by careful weight management for up to 6 months, new research shows.

The findings were published online March 21, 2016 in Diabetes Care by Dr Sarah Steven of Newcastle University, United Kingdom, and colleagues.

"At the time of diagnosis, everyone should be told that type 2 diabetes is potentially reversible by substantial weight loss. For people with type 2 diabetes who resent their loss of health, there is a genuine way out. It's not an easy option but to be carefully considered, planned, and discussed with spouse or partner," lead investigator Dr Roy Taylor, also of Newcastle University, told Medscape Medical News.

In the study of 30 overweight or obese adults with type 2 diabetes of durations from 6 months to 23 years, weight fell significantly following an 8-week mostly liquid diet of 600 to 700 calories a day, and 12 of the 30 individuals (40%) achieved an average fasting plasma glucose (FPG) level of less than 126 mg/dL.

After a further 6 months of an intensive, individualized weight-management program, 13 of 30 (43%) maintained an FPG below 126 mg/dL while off all glucose-lowering medications.

"Substantial weight loss can be achieved only by severe calorie restriction….The transition from low-calorie liquid diet to normal eating requires very careful management. This two-step approach to substantial weight loss is successful, unlike current beliefs about how to lose weight," Dr Taylor said.

But obesity expert Arya M Sharma, MD, from University of Alberta, Edmonton, is skeptical: "The fact that a low-calorie diet can reverse diabetes is something we've known a long time….The key issue here is not whether weight loss can actually reverse diabetes or put it into remission but the durability of the effect….As far as obesity-management trials, 6 months is not long."

Dr Sharma added, "It's a proof-of-principle study showing that if you lose weight through a diet, there's a good chance your diabetes will go into remission. But by the same note, if you put the weight back on, your diabetes is going to come back."

You can reverse this rotten disease,

Barbara G

@PaulaStaley, two very good sources for dieting to reduce the effects of both Type 1 and Type 2 are

www.dietdoctor.com a website (free) by Dr. Andreas Enfeldt, and also google Dr. Jason Fung a Canadian doctor who specialises in Diabetes, there are several talks by him also on the dietdoctor website. There are many ways to attack this disease  but these two doctors are showing the world it can be done, either through Lo Carb Low Calorie or Lo Carb Hi Fat.

I'm living proof that Type 2 Diabetes is reversible, @dancefoxtrot, but I don't think it can be done in a 8-week program.  My internist advised me that I could reverse the diabetes by loosing weight, changing my eating habits, and losing weight. But, she recommended that weight loss should not exceed 1 pound a week, and that had to be accomplished by reducing calories and increasing exercise. She helped me develop a diet & exercise plan that worked - I lost the weight over about 35 weeks, exercising every day for that entire time. In addition to reducing calories, I eliminated all high-glycemic foods, such as white bread, white potatoes, white rice, etc.   Over that 35 weeks my A1C reading went from 7.9 to 5.8, and I was changed from Type 2 Diabetes to Pre-Diabetes. I have recently been changed to non-diabetic.

But, to make this long story short, I could not possibly have done that in 8 weeks.

Hi Folks - I'm new to the challenge, but I was looking for one to keep me moving! I've been trying to reach 10,000 steps/day, but I'm not breaking even 5,000/day. I've got to work on this, and I'm hoping you can help me stay motivated!

THanks!

PaulaStaley,

You are not "one of those" people -- you are Paula.  And you love your grandchildren enough to change with them and for them.  Too many people in this sad world live without ever coming near the joy of giving that kind of love. Too many have no children or grandchildren to love them back.

Go for it, mamaw -- change your world and your grandson's -- just be kind to yourself while you do it.

We're all rooting for you here.

DianeNYC

P.S. I'm a grandma myself.

Welcom, Trinny.

This is a really good group of folks.  Lots of inspiration and helpful advice.  I know it's starting weight but oh, I would love to see 123.6 again -- somewhere other than the rear-view mirror.

I believe you can do it, @slglover126! We all can. All it takes is a change of mind about food and body, and the determination to do what it takes to stay healthy. That's why we are all here. It is so exiting to read about the progress most of us are making on this site.

So, let's keep on keeping on!
