Excercising at home.. Unable to go outside walking. Challenges!

So, most days i go to the gym for my excercise. However, occasionally, I'm stuck working all day when the gym is open and can't go. I don't want to miss out on excercise, and I can't simply go out for a morning walk as I live in a part of canada that just saw two feet of snow in the last 24 hours. (also, freakin -40 right now.) so I am simply seeking ideas for excercise to do inside my house so I don't completely miss out.

the challenge to this is I'm still obese and working on my muscle development. I'm also coming back from a long-term disability that limits my ability to do anything high impact if it puts pressure on my foot muscles, and because of the obesity I'm still not strong enough to do things like situps or pushups. And everything I have knowledge of for home excercise falls into one of those categories >.> Any ideas are much appreciated!

Hi thereare you able to do moderate walking? I would suggest Leslie sansone DVDs they are low impact. You can also use resistance bands and small free weights for some strength training. On days when I can't get to the gym, I use my Schwinn airdyne bike and or do a Leslie sansone dvd which is not too hard on the joints. The dvds might be a good starter solution?
good luck!

Hi. Leslie is excellent. May I suggest Jillian Michaels on You Tube. She has a ten day yoga work out. It is not standing there in hold positions. She also has a thirty day challenge. You could also go on You Tube for inspiration. There are tons of transformation clips to view for inspiration. Also anything you are looking for just punch it into You Tube and I am sure you will find it. I highly reccomend Jillian she is awesome. Good luck

Hi Maithuna.  I second the resistance bands.  You can start off with very light resistance and work up at your own pace.  I got a very nice set of bands on Amazon and they are the type that you can use single or attach them in any combination.  So virtually they go from 3 lbs. up to 90+ lbs.  There are also an abundance of free videos on Youtube for resistance band exercises and just about any other exercise you can think of.  I also have not been able to get out to walk due to the weather.  I walk up and back 3-4 steps each way for the length of a TV show.  It's not the same as being outside, but you'd be surprised with the amount of steps and active minutes you can accumulate.  Hope you find an indoor activity that works for you.  Keep us posted.

I am a foster parent and am often unable to get out on weekends to the gym because my kids are home all day. What I do is a lot of stairs. I make a circut for myself of things like 5 sets of stairs, some kettlebell swings, squats, you could do elevated push ups (using a couch or something). if you use pintrest you could look up body weight workouts and they need no equipment and are all possible at home 🙂

Hi Maithuna,

I stand with my feet 2 steps back from my kitchen bench, place my hands on the edge of the bench and do my pushups off the bench. You can also do then leaning on the wall, 2 steps away from wall. Squats are simple as well.

Pretend like you're going to sit on a chair but only go 95% of the way down, then stand up. Sit on the bed, push back of your knee onto the bed and hold for 3-5 seconds do this 5 times to strengthen your quad muscles. Do the same for left leg. I use my clock with second hand to time.

You can also do this as a wall squat using the wall to support your back, stand with your feet hip width apart, squeeze bum muscles together, slide down the wall and don't let knees bend inwards. If need to can put pillow between legs to stop them from bending in.

Sit up, resting on your bedhead and place a rolled towel under your knee then straighten your leg as far as possible, this will strengthen your Inner Range Quads. Don't overdo it to cause any pain. You shouldn't feel any pain with these gentle physiotherapy exercises. I used them to strengthen my legs after vascular disease cut the blood supply to my right leg by 75%. Swap to the other leg and Do 5 reps holding for 5 seconds with both legs.

Lie down on your back with your left knee bent and your right knee straight, Tighten the thigh muscles of your right leg by pushing your knee down onto the bed. Lift your right leg up, keeping your knee straight. Hold for 5 seconds for 5 reps, both legs. Will come back with more at another time. Hope these help and God's blessings, sweet lady. _/\_ 🙂

Update for Everyone: temporarily I'm doing multiple sets of pushups off the wall, situps on an incline and leg lifts/stretching to keep conditioning my muscles while I'm stuck at home. I can walk in a limited way, but my right foot is where my current disability is, and if I'm not nice to it then I'll just be down longer. It started with a severe case of plantar fasciitis 2 years ago that still isn't cured (treatments have reduced the pain, but I still can't stand/walk for more than 20 minutes at a time without serious pain) and the latest diagnosis was sesamoiditis (not sure if I spelled that right?) in the same foot. so, taking it easy and still watching my calories.

Plantar fascitis can be tough, and if you are now dealing with sesamoiditis, that makes sense for you to "tread lightly" here.

I actually work for NCAA division one university in athletics, and our trainers see this injury a lot. I would suggest taking a water bottle 2/3 full and freezing it. You can roll it under foot, to help reduce inflammation and soothe the achiness. Especially great after activity. Would be great if you had access to a pool for some non weight bearing cardio?

Thats a good amount of activity, keep it up!

Thank you! that's basically what I do everyday to help manage the pain... I sit at my desk for large chunks of time doing schoolwork so I keep half a dozen bottles in the freezer and ice my foot 2-3 times a day. it's annoying, but at least manageable. the next serious treatment option for me is actually surgery, but both me and the doctor are hoping the weight loss will end up working better. basically, if it's still hurting after I've dropped my 250 lbs I want to, then under the knife it is  >.<
