First-Time Runner

Hey there!

Throughout my childhood, I was involved in several sports. I quit basketball my freshman year of high school but continued floor hockey all the way through my senior year. That being said, I am not a runner. Running has never been my thing. But this summer I am hoping to change that as I have recently moved into a new house and there is a trail stretching across several states running through my back yard (oh the puns!). Any tips for a first time runner?

Go slow, really slow.

Start with the couch to 5k app on your phone and stick with it even if it seems easy.

I have done couch to 5k three times now and each time I get over confident, push myself too hard and injure myself. It takes time for the muscles and tendons in your legs to be able to handle it.

Other than that, enjoy it and good luck!

I agree with @RivalDealer

But your trials sound wonderful! I love trails!

Welcome to the Fitbit Family @Blackpuck101! As @RivalDealer mentioned, the C25K is a really helpful app to get you started on a running goal.

Good luck! Smiley Very Happy

I'm agreeing with everyone else, the Couch to 5k is a great ap and yes, be careful to not overdo it.  It will get harder so just go with it.  I am actually doing the couch to 10k now.

Set goals for yourself.  Schedule a 5k in a couple months, something that will motivate you to get out and do it or if you have a friend that will run with you a few times a week.

Don't forget to do other sorts of exercise, I'm sure a bike ride on that trail would be amazing, do a weight class at the gym if you're a member.  The stronger you are the easier it will become.

I'm kind of jealous of the trail behind your house!

Have fun and don't get discouraged, running is hard, I am in pain most days but I feel amazing (if that makes sense).
