Fitbit: Generic food vs brand names

I hate that all the food in the Fitbit database is out of restaurants or store food with barcodes. That does not encourage healthy eating habits. I live in a household where we mostly cook our own food, so it would be nice to have a way to filter out all the prodcut food from the lists and just have some generic options. How do you log your food if you do this?

Welcome to the Fitbit Family @flowerdealer!

When cooking on your own, it is best to have a database that is less "on the move". This is why

I recommend to link your Fitbit Profile to MyFitnessPal which has users all over the world and a huge database, including barcode scanner and recipe builder.

They are supported both through a computer as well as through most Smartphones. You can get more information on this page.

You can add whatever you need from http://calorielab.com/index.html

You are right, fitbit should have all of the generic foods as choices - hope they update soon.

I run into the same problems when I am making my own meals instead of buying store bought foods. For example- If you ate a T-Bone Steak- You weigh the meat after cooking and you go to the database to see how much 3 oz of T-Bone Steak has in calories. Sometimes it takes me awhile to just sit down and eat because I have to do research and try to find foods that are similar in size and weight to what I am eating before I can log in. I also go to the Internet and look for calorie counts of certain foods if the Fitibt data base does not show it. Once I find it, I add it as a new food group along with the Nutritional Information.

This is not a good excuse for fitbit not updating to include generic foods.

I look at My Fitness Pal, but it doens't track fiber, for people who are tracking net carbs.

Is there a site that links with FitBit and tracks fiber/net carbs?

I cook most of my own food and don't eat a lot of processed things, so I agree that the FitBit food log is difficult to use, but I do appreciate that it has a carb and a fiber column. I also wish FitBit would update to include non-processed foods in the data bank.

I'll be glad to help on this @SweetLou

First, log into your account on at http://www.myfitnesspal.comOnce you’ve logged in, click “My Home” then “Settings” then “Diary settings.” On the following page, you can customize which nutrients are tracked in your diary. You may track up to six items, one of which must be calories.

If you would like to view the totals of other nutrients that are not on your home page, click “My Home” then “Reports” then “Nutrients”.

Hope this helps! If you have any questions, please let the MyFitnessPal team know about this

The more you submit your new database entries from the scan barcode also helps. Not every store branded products are broadcasted online.
