Gastritis pain/ ulcer pain and eating when not hungry?

Hi guys, I have had ulcers and gastritis on and off for over a decade now (more like 11 years). I find myself often eating when not hungry to get rid of the pain. I have been on proton pump inhibitors, tried bismuth, zinc-carnosine, CTM, high doses of probiotics and now Siberian Pine Oil. Some of these help, but I still get flare ups.

Generally I have to eat a lot of soft, mushy food to get the pain to go away. Has anyone ever tried to get fitter with chronic gastritis? I am no longer infected with h pylori but still have very bad days where my stomach swells/ I vomit/ lots of pain. I'd rather not eat all the time out of pain (I tend to think someone should eat out of hunger, not pain).

My doctors don't really know what to do. They say I shouldn't be in pain any longer, since the infection is gone, and they tell me to ''keep doing what I'm doing'' (which isn't helping that much).

Anyone dealt with refractory ulcers/ gastritis? How do you deal without eating a ton of food to stop the pain? (If I don't eat a little bit all the time, it feels like the lining of my stomach is erroding. I'm rarely hungry though...usually very nauseated).

Any suggestions of things to try would be great. It's also harder to want to walk around or do anything active on pain days because you feel sick/ want to curl up in a ball and not move.

Oh, I try not to take any painkillers, esp. NSAIDS, as these worsen ulcers.

But suggestions for pain relief that is natural or which will not hurt the stomach lining = very much appreciated.

I do take baking soda in water some times. It takes off the edge of the pain.

I feel ya, been there too, with a bit of gallbladder inflammation thrown in from medication. I find making sure i include some protein in whatever i'm eating helps as not only does it make you feel fuller longer, it is usually more alkaline in your stomach and helps calm everything down. That and drink green tea!

I spent years on medication and went though courses of anti-biotics and probiotics and really struggled with it. One of the doctors told me to pay particilar attention to any times it was worse than usual and I recorded the following foods as being especially bad:

  • Pastries
  • Potatoes
  • Bread
  • Pasta
  • Rice

I told the doctor this and she told me to stop eating those foods. At the time I thought it would be pretty much impossible, bread was a staple with every meal, and potatoes, bread, pasta and rice accompanied everything else.

Eventually I did cut them all out and no longer have any symptoms whatsoever. It has totally gone and I no longer take any medication.

Turns out a lot of people are sensitive to grains, I think that was the main culprit for me. Maybe try cutting out the foods listed? It wasn't easy for me to cut out these foods, but found I can eat as much veggies and meat as I want instead, but the end of the pain was worth it to me.

I'm so sorry you've been dealing with that for so long! 😞

As @RivalDealer said, a lot of those foods (think essentially grains and psuedo-grains) tend to be underlying culprits that wait in the silence.

It sounds like you have tried about every remedy out there, but have you tried an elimination diet? Many people are sensitive to certain foods, but have no idea because the body has become tolerant of it over time. Try eliminating grains for a while, then slowly add them back one at a time (eg. add back rice, wait a week, add wheat, etc) and see what helps (see http://www.webmd.com/allergies/guide/allergies-elimination-diet for a baseline). I had similar issues and after eliminating wheat, I haven't had a single flare-up.  Interestingly, I still eat it from time to time (usually unintentionally), and when I do, I can tell my body doesn't appreciate it.

You are totally right, I really miss pizza, it's the only thing I miss but my family like to have a pizza every so often. I got one once when I was working a nightshift and the other guys wanted to order pizza, I was really ill the next day.

It's funny really, I have had bread all my life so stopping eating grains at 37 seemed drastic, but the difference in my health has been pretty amazing.

Sorry to hear about the difficulties you are experiencing. I had gastritis and it was horrible. My doctor told me to eat fruits or a healthy snack between foods and eat the 3 meals at the same hour every day, pretty much what you are doing, and it helped me to get back to normal. However, it took me a couple of weeks of following the same food schedule to start feeling better. Hopefully you get better soon. Robot Very Happy

Wow, didn't know there were others like me out there! I'm brand new, just got my fitbit yesterday. My doctors tell me I "shouldn't" be nauseated still, either . . . I had MALT lymphoma, but I'm in remission from that. The H. Pylori has been cleared up for several years. Still, lots of gastritis left and ulcers will appear and then clear.

What's helped me somewhat is bone broth or other sources of good gelatin. I use the nice Great Lakes kind, sometimes make fruit gummies with it. But bone broth is the best and keeps the pain somewhat under control and even keeps the nausea at bay a bit.

The whole ordeal has kept me inactive, VERY inactive, for the last four years and packing on the pounds has made everything just worse :-(.

I know this is a fairly old topic, but I just wanted to give my support to the suggestion of Bone Broth---the past year I have been dealing with this very same problem and have only recently been able to finally identify what it is that I have been battling. It wasn't until this week that I stumbled upon the advice of collagen and Bone Broth---and really because I had no choice, having been dropped from my health insurance and having no place to go for help. This has been the ONLY thing I've found that has seemed to make an honest to god difference--and fast! I have no idea how long an ulcer takes to heal, but as long as I'm not in agony with a gnawing empty painful stomach, I am so so thankful. So yes, anyone---if you can't seem to get rid of that terrible ulcer pain, PLEASE at least try collagen/ Bone Broth. It could make a significant difference in lowering those terrible symptoms!
