Hi, I really don't think there is a rule of thumb as regards to a good exercise routine because a lot of factors comes into play. First; your work schedule; another factor is how much of your time you intend to dedicate to exercising your body. I have a friend that walks back from school everyday; and he considers this part of his daily exercise routine (This is an option I am willing to explore as well). You can as well fix an early morning run into your schedule and they hit the gym during the weekend (I am assuming this is the time most people are less busy; again it depends on what your daily plan is). You can start with an exercise that focus on whole body training; and focus on specific body part as time goes on and you get convenient with it. It's also important to take a day break between exercise routine; especially when you're just starting out.

I take 3 classes at the gym each week and the other 2 days I go I mix weights and strength training (maybe a little cardio sometimes). I found what works for me is doing something different every day. If I do my cardio step class on Thursday, then Friday or Saturday I need to focus on core and strength. If I lift and work more on weights on say Monday, then Tuesday I go for the high cardio class. For me it's about balance.
I highly recommend the Les Mills workout programs if you have them available, they are incredible in my opinion!
