I have recently undergone gastric bypass surgery. I am four months out. I was wondering if anyone else on here has had any type of weight loss surgery.

I had the roux en y gastric bypass surgery March 1992- 22 years ago. At that time nothing was done laparoscopically so I had a vertical incision from the top of my rib cage to my belly button. At the time of the surgery I weighed 310 lbs and was classified as morbidly obese. Over the first year I successfully lost 160 lbs. I began an excercise regime, walking only until I lost 50 lbs. I kept a personal trainer for almost 6 years toning and firming. Because I was relatively young when I had the surgery, I did not require skin removal. 6 years ago, I survived cancer, and have since then gained 50 lbs back. I firmly believe it is due to genetically modified wheat in breads and most foods. I have begun a wheat free diet and have quickly shed 20 of the 50 lbs in only 6 weeks.
I someone asked me if I would choose the gastric bypass today if I was 300 lbs. It is not a quick fix. It is a change if life. To this day I do not drink any fruit juices due to the high fructrose/sucrose -dumping syndrom. I do not eat ice cream, pies, cakes, etc becasue I get sick from the high concentration of sugar. I still limit my red meats due to the long time it takes to process in my smaller stomach. I do not drink any alcohol or carbonated beverages. The gastric pybas improved the quality of my life, I was able to enjoy my family and daughter when she was young. Prior to the surgery I could not walk up a flight of stair with out being winded. So YES I would do it again.
Weight loss surgery is a personal decision. It is not a quick fix and requires much work to maintain the weight loss. Once it is off...yes you can stretch your new pouch out, and yes you can gain back the weight.

Good luck to you

Hello, my name is Greg, and I had surgery 8 yrs ago. All was going well for 5 years, maintained my weight though some medical issues cropped up.
My question is how has your weight been the last few years, I personally have put on 60 pds in the last 2.5 years, No doctors or nutrionist can give me answers as to why I am gaining. Appretnly they have no answers,
With the surgery being so new, people in our time line have either disappered or not kept up with doctors.

Hi Greg.
I had my surgery, gastric bypass, 22 years ago. Within one year I lost 179 lbs. I did not like how I looked or felt at that weight so I worked with a trainer and nutritionist and kept my weight to 158-160 lbs for almost 15 years.
7 years ago I had major surgery-cancer, (radical Historectomy), and gained 50 lbs. Since then I have also had malabsorbtion issues, b-12 and iron deficiencies. I just started seeing a gastro-specialist. They are going to get me started on iron infusions, and b-12 injections. The malabsorbtion causes issues with bowel regulation, and how food is absorbed...hence the weight gain. I am scheduled for an endoscopy and colonoscopy next week to be sure nothing else is going on internally. I have already lost 18 lbs in the 8 weeks I have been seeing my new doctor. Oh I have also gone to a wheat free diet. The genetic modification in wheat causes bloating in the belly. Other than the issues above, over the 22 years since my surgery, I have had no other medical issues.

I had Vertical Banded Gastroplasty way back in February 1988. I lost only six pounds the week I was in hospital when normal expected weight loss was 15-25 pounds. Girlfriend had same surgery three weeks after I came home and she lost more that week in hospital than I had in a month. She was back on normal food long before me as I was afraid to eat it as my weight loss was so slow. I basically lived on pureed chicken and vegetable soups the first six months. Overall I lost about 43 lbs of which some of it came back over time. I still want to lose at least 70 lbs. I try to follow Joel Fuhrman's Eat to Live and I do probably 95% of the time. I have no medical issues other than my weight. My recommendation is to stay away from simple carbs. i.e. bread, potatoes or anything with flour in it as well as soda pop of any kind.

Hi Glyndalin, have you had your surgery yet? I am in the process of taking classes, having the psych eval, etc. and am expecting to have gastric sleeve done by Thanksgiving. I need to talk to people that are going through the same thing and was wondering if you are interested. I just bought the Fitbit to help me get used to tracking everything before surgery. Hope to hear from you and hope you are doing well.

Hi Lynne,
My surgery is scheduled for 10/27. I'm doing the RNY. I'd love to join forces with you here and on MyFitnessPal if you're a member there. (It syncs very well with Fitbit and I usually post everything on that site). Here's to a FANTASTIC 2015 for both of us!
Peace,
Glyndalin

Sure thing! I'm sorry to hear you got a delayed start, but, hey, that means you can get through "your last food holiday season". I don't know about in the UK, but having your food restricted here during the holidays isn't just difficult for the reasons of diet - it's hard socially. Fortunately, I just have one week with my folks and it's 2 months after surgery, so I hope we'll be okay. (Mom's the queen of food-pushing.)
