Hi there, First time poster :)

Good afternoon all, 

First time poster here.  Have decided to give myself a good kick in the pants and got myself back on track after a year of being lazy and over-eating.  Have gotten myself back to the gym and increased my daily steps and am tracking what I eat (I am a total foodie which doesn't help when I don't keep an eye on things).  

Am needing to shift 2 stone (28lbs) to get myself within the healthy range weight wise as I am very short.  Have commenced a new diet this week where I don't have any bread, rice, pasta or anything grain related as I'm at increased risk of T2DM (strong family history as well as being overweight) and instead replace those carbs with fruit/veg and increased my fat % and protein (the latter not too much). 

Any advice would be welcome.

I'm happy to share some of my tips.

  • I've learned that doing "diets" isn't as successful as making lifestyle changes. It may be okay to do a specific "diet" for immediate, short term goals. However, the best changes are ones that you can maintain as part of your normal lifestyle.
  • We use smaller plates for our meals. I started doing this after reading an article about using smaller plates, especially if you're doing portion control. When you do portion control and use a large plate, you really notice how much empty space is on your plate. That gets you thinking that you are "starving" yourself. When you put those same portions on a small plate and it fills or almost fills the plate, your mind goes "Look at all the food on my plate". So, you don't feel like you're denying yourself.
  • Eat slowly & mindfully. When you eat slowly, that allows enough time for the "I'm full" signal from your stomach to reach your brain. Eating fast often results in overeating since that signal needs time to reach the brain. Eating mindfully means we enjoy each bite, savoring the flavor, texture, and all the other goodness.
  • It's okay to "indulge" every now & then. Enjoy the experience with little guilt. Otherwise, you can get resentful of being on such a strict diet. It's easier to rebel and go overboard when you feel resentful.
  • Above all, remember who and why you're doing this. This is for you. You're doing doing this to be healthier so you can enjoy more of life.
