Reduce grains and sugar - Read all labels on your food to ensure you are not consuming too much sugar - you would be surprised at how much is added into foods. Eat natural foods (veggies and fruit) and poteins. You'd be surprised at the weight reduction. Good luck. Let me know how it works out!

I'm not looking for abs, but really hoping to tone and get under a bmi of 20..

BMI as a goal is for people who are outside the normal range: if your BMI is 40, you want to bring it down to 30, if it's 30, you want to bring it down to 25, if it's 17, you want to bring it up to 20. Yours is within the normal range, you don't have to do anything about it. A BMI of 20 with your height would mean a weight of 124 pounds, btw: are you sure you want to lose 19 pounds from your current level?!

A good goal would be to increase your activity level. Your Fitbit is perfect for that. Your profile shows you were quite active before Christmas (around 10,000 steps per day), but are now down to 3000-4000 steps. This is very low for someone your age and in your shape. Forget about weight and BMI, get moving, eat/drink healthier/smarter (veggies instead of sugary stuff, water instead of sodas etc.) and you will see results.

Do you do any weight training?  That will rev up your metabolism to burn more calories even when you're sedentary, as well as "tone up" your body.  Strive to train each body part 3X/week.  If you alternate between body parts, rather than resting between sets, you'll be done in 20-30 mins. and get your heart beating at the same time 🙂

Probably...but you're going to have to really be strict on your diet and hit the cardio and strength training hard to accomplish that. Also remember: you can't spot-reduce...you'll burn fat equally all over your body, there is no way to target just your midsection. If you work hard and are consistent, you'd be surprised at what you can accomplish. 🙂

Good luck!

are you male or female, how old, dieting currently or not?

I am 5'6" too and I can tell you that belly fat goes away as the rest of your body fat percentage goes down. It isn't a separate thing like the diet ads want you to believe.

Your BMI is about 23, which is within the normal range. If you currently have unhealthy eating habits and don't exercise, you can probably achieve visible results by switching to healthier eating habits and exercising. Anyway, being healthy and happy is more important than the way you look.

I live in Cleveland, as you know, our weather is terrrible, right now everyone is snowed in, and the road are dangerous and we are being asked to not drive anywhere, because of the snow and ice.

at 16, you have youth, height and metabolism in your favor.

If you eat fruit & veg, cut out the junk and soda and get moving, like jog in place or do leg lifts while you are watching any tv or movies instead of sitting -you should be fine. That is all I had to do at 16. Your metabolism will rev right back up to where it should be.

you don't want to start chasing diets and training your body to restrict or you'll be stuck doing it forever... just get rid of the junk and keep active.

RicoFitness - I've got lots of family in Cleveland!  That snow is something else.  For weather like that, I'm all about doing indoor workout DVD's. Cardio kickboxing is a great calore burner...find something that you truly enjoy that works up a sweat and it'll be time well-spent indoors. 🙂

That's the problem, I work out at lease 3 times a week, eat really well, (not all of the time) I don't drink pop, barely drink juice, little to no fast food, but I'm still not losing weight. I do very intense cardio and weight training. I'm just really not sure why i'm not seeing results. I can feel abs under my fat, but not losing fat in the stomach area.

I don't know if you eat starches (any grains -- like pasta, bread, rice, etc), but if you cut those out while emphasizing veggies, protein and healthy fats, may help you hit your goal

I know this will be an unpopular post but I lose best when I focus on my calories and steps and quit all the crazy cardio and weights. I think I was just confusing my body into thinking it was under stress.

Yeah sugar and carbs are my weakness, I'm starting to think that reducing both significantly will be the way that my body will respond to exercise and dieting.
