My pace has to be 3.8 MPH or over to "earn" Very Active Minutes. I'm 5'3" tall. It's not how hard you're working, but how fast. 🙂

Different Fitbit trackers grant very active minutes differently. The One is the stingiest and the Zip the most generous. The Flex and Force fit somewhere in between. Merely walking isn't sufficient to get VAMs, you need to walk fast enough, or more precisely have a pace (number of steps per minute) high enough (in case you are overstriding).

There are 2 ways I see that effect how you acquire Active Minutes.
One is where you place your device on your body. For example, the people that use the One place it on their shirt, belt, pant pocket and other places. For the it works best on the pant pocket.
The second is that the Active Minutes is somewhat measured from how many steps you take in a minute (speed).
One thing to keep in mind is that all Fitbit devices are just there to help you along the path. The big picture is hopefully that you want to be fit/lose weight. Therefore dont focus too much on how the device counts your steps/active minutes and more on pushing yourself.

I have the flex, and when I enter my activity manually, the active minutes are more accurate than when I let the flex determine activituy by itself.
