@carolyndaniel when you set up your Fitbit it asks for your statistics (age, gender, height, weight, and activity level).  Based on this information it estimates your Basal Metabolic Rate (BMR), then you select a weight loss goal (.5lb/week; 1lb/week; 1.5lb/week; 2lb/week).  It then takes your BMR and subtracts out the required calorie deficit to reach your goal (3,500 calories = 1 pound).  So let's say your BMR came to 2,500 calories/day and you wanted to lose 1 lb a week (3,500/7 = 500) so Fitbit would say if you did nothing all day but lay around you could eat 2,000 calories that day (2,500 bmr - 500 deficit).  Now if you move around a lot and workout Fitbit will increase your daily allowance.  Sites like this and MyFitnessPal are designed to fluctuate your caloric intake based on exercise so you always have roughly the same daily caloric deficit (500 in this example).  Hope this helps.
