Any tips on how to use the Fitbit to assist weight loss. I need to drop about 15 pounds.

The most obvious is to wear it and sync it daily to see your stats. I believe the AMA recommends getting 10,000 steps in a day (hence that is the default when you set up your Fitbit) so for the first week or so just do your normal daily routine and see how many steps you get in. After that start adding cardio (go for a walk, start jogging, etc). Just make sure to start slowly, too many people have given up because they started to hard and burned themselves out. I personally started with walking a mile for a week (5 days), then moved up to two miles for the next week and a half (7 days of exercise), then I went up to 3 miles a day (for 2 weeks). After that I started a couch to 5k program on my iphone and 2.5 months after starting exercising I am now consistently running 4-5 miles/day every other day of the week.
Good luck in your journey.

I am using FitBit to lose weight and basically, I just log everything and then make sure I do what my wrist tells me to. For example, if I haven't met my step goal, I make sure I take more steps. I log everything I eat and don't go over the calorie goals it gives me. If I haven't had enough water according to my FitBit, I drink more and so on. It's been pretty successful for me and I have now lost 17 lbs since Jan. 1.

You asked, "Is anyone really losing weight using one of these things?"
YUP!
I lost all the weight I had picked up during my 30s and 40's while dealing with hypothyroid, wonky hormones and taking care of my grandmother and mother while they were dying. The fitbit and the food log website are a perfect team, I did it while working from home and seldom actually making my 10,000 step goal. I am 5'6" and 108-110 llbs, thanks to my fitbit. You can check my food logs on fitbit.

Yes! Got my Fitbit One 22Dec2013 - was restricted to walking (couldn't run after banging my shin) for 3 weeks in January and by watching what I eat - decreasing beer intake - and walking or running to get my steps in at least 6 days a week - have lost 23 pounds as of this morning.

I just posted my weigh in on instagram, you can see it at:

I've transitioned to posting my dietlog that way as well. I feels very strange after weighing and measuring with fitbit for over a year but it isn't like I am jumping into eating differently. Check out my instagram: http://instagram.com/idthornell
