Is my egg-eating okay?

Hi All! First post on these forums and would really appreciate your feedback/tips on my egg-eating diet.

As a background , I'm male with a desk-job, 5'6" in height weighing 170lbs approx. I want to go back to 150lbs, which was my weight coming off of a varsity college-life 4 years ago. I got my Fitbit Flex around 2 weeks ago and am actually having a lot of fun putting effort to reach my 10k steps everyday (achieved 11k everyday for the past 7 days 😄 ; don't even make 5k based on my mobile phone before that).

Anyways, to save money and eat healthier I've been bringing lunch from home to work everyday. Lately, I've been having 2 chicken eggs and a piece of fruit (usually a banana or a mango but not both) for lunch every work day and skip on any egg during the weekends. I do this since I prefer the eggs (taste-wise) to boiled vegetables, which is my alternative. Although it is a lot less than a regular meal, I like how the eggs make me feel full and not in a groggy/sleepy way (compared to a meaty/carby lunch) throughout the afternoon. My breakfast and dinner (usually eaten at home) is the usual homecooking (carbs+some meat, with veggies for dinner). I limit myself to 1,400 calories per day and am usually below 1,400; except Saturdays when I usually eat out with my SO or friends.

I feel my research off the internet have so far been inconclusive, and would like to ask you guys whether you think my daily egg intake is too much or actually hampering my weight loss. Any article is much appreciated.

Thanks in advance, and I wish everyone a good time losing weight 😄

Watch out, resturants serve two eggs for breakfast, they're trying to kill you!

Please.

Eggs are the perfect food. Here is an article that links to a number of studies done on eating eggs. http://authoritynutrition.com/6-reasons-why-eggs-are-the-healthiest-food-on-the-planet/

... Does no one do egg whites? Even those Egg Beaters are okay from time to time (I don't do processed food but that's my own personal sway; there is nothing so over-the-top in their ingredient list that most people don't have on a daily basis anyway).

Well guys, there's no need to fight over this issue. The main reason I posted this here is because I've likewise been reading conflicting articles regarding the number of eggs allowable per day. However, I did not mean to start an unhealthy debate among members here.

Anyway, let's stick to articles we've read and posting our OWN opinions. No need to rebutt on the last person's understanding/idea of the issue at hand.

Also, so far the articles posted here have all been very educational. I again ate 2 eggs and a fruit for lunch today, and I guess I will be doing the same for the rest of the week and maybe next week included. I'll let you guys know if I did lose weight after, but so far I can report that at least I've felt less groggy in the afternoons compared to eating ~3oz of meat+veggies.

As entertaining as the rebuttal was, it did offer some information to me, so thank you to the OP.

I am trying to cut out more carbs and meat, and I think now eggs might be one way to do that.

How does one egg hold up against lean meats? Anyone know? (I bet I could google this...)

I have 2 hard boiled eggs everyday for lunch, and on the wekends I have 2 scrammbled eggs and 4 pieces of bacon.  In the past 6 months my cholesterol went from high to normal.  and in that time I've lost almost 75lbs.  For me lossing all that weight offsets any bad effects from eggs.

I'm a huge fan of egg whites, and love throwing some spice in there @MRose

I usually get them on the stove, and do my best do remove the yolk (I usually get about 90% of it off). Do you have any tips on how to maximize the amount of egg white mass? In other words, what methods of cooking egg whites do you think would help keep make me feel most full?

Line the bottom of a frying pan with diced onions and garlic, fry in a little butter till caramelised

Break and stir 6 eggs in a jug with salt, pepper, hot sauce

Pour in the pan and cook on max for two minutes

Grate 50g of cheese on top, transfer to the grill for 2 minutes

I prefer eating egg whites over regular eggs when possible myself. Even though I have 2 egg meals a week from my dietitian, egg whites were my favorite staple. As long as it didn't stink the house up.

Would think moderation....  Everyone I read indicates moderation.  The Mayo Clinic link is a good one.. Here is another:  Eggs May Promote Colon Cancer

The premise here is that eggs are rich in both cholesterol and choline both of which have cancer promoting properties.

Yeah I know, everything causes cancer..... Some of you really have strong options about your breakfast food.... You should definately stay away from Captain Crunch - Feel free to flame me now... 🙂

I just posted about my cholesterol in another thread but my thoughts are that its definitely genetic. No doubt about it. My father has had super high cholesterol his entire life and he isn't dying of cardiac disease, he's dying of alzheimer's. He's in his 80's.

Me and my husband are perfect examples of this genetic thing. My husband was a whopping 400+ pounds and would eat fast food daily. He was an extremely heavy consumer of the stuff so he must have been having huge amounts of trans fats daily, for decades. He was also drinking 2 liter Cokes, multiples times a day. That's a lot of sugar. Not an egg in sight. Heck, not even real meat in sight.

He had metabolic syndrome, etc but his cholesterol levels were absolutely perfect. His good cholesterol was up, his bad was down and his triglycerides were extremely low, yet, we all know, he was a walking heart attack waiting to happen.

He has now lost all of the weight, is eating healthy and his cholesterol hasn't budged. It's still perfect. As if nothing occurred. It's not even lower than before. It's the SAME.

I on the other hand, was also obese, not as much as him but I was right behind him. Always ate low fat but high grains and my cholesterol was terrible. My ratios were awful, my triglycerides were through the roof and I wasn't even able to walk on a treadmill for a stress test.

Now I lost all of that weight and I can actually jog but my cholesterol is still through the roof. I dropped my triglycerides, yippie. I upped my good cholesterol, yippie, but my "bad" cholesterol has gone right up with the good, just not as fast or high. The good one is going up much faster but the bad one hasn't budged. And I am way thinner than my husband. He hasn't even caught up to me yet.

The weird thing is that we both have the SAME ratios, its just that my total is way higher. So, I don't know what to tell you. They keep dropping the normal cholesterol range almost yearly and the drug companies already said they wanted everyone on a statin, including children by some date that I can't remember. So, when you take that into consideration, mines doesn't seem that high if compared to the range from years ago.

This cholesterol scare has done nothing to prevent heart disease. It's still the number one killer and we got more people on statins, cholesterol free and egg free diets than ever before. Heck, I went egg free and my cholesterol actually went up.

I guess he who is doomed from cholesterol, just is. At least now I can say, I don't know if the cholesterol will kill me, whereas before, I was certain the metabolic syndrome would. Going from certainty to doubt is as good as its going to get for me, for now.

You may want to use a different formula to calculate your total cholesterol, especially if your triglycerides are fairly low.  Standard is the Friedewald formula, but the Iranian formula is more accurate with low trigs.

I have no clue who the guy in this link is, so I can't attest to anything he says, but the site does have a calculator that gives results for both the Friedewald and Iranian methods.

Cholesterol Calculator

You might also want to keep in mind that dropping total cholestrol levels is not always a good goal.  This study shows the correlation (which I know is not causation, but it's a pretty strong link) between cholesterol levels and your odds of actually dying, which in the end is what most people are trying to avoid.

For men, there's a U-shaped curved with a sweet spot around 215 TC that has the best odds of waking up on the right side of the dirt every morning.  For women, it's a straight line, with higher TC correlating to less chance of keeling over, and lower total cholesterol equating to a higher risk of kicking the bucket.  So the inverse of what you would think.

Is the use of cholesterol in mortality risk algorithms in clinical guidelines valid? Ten years prosp...
