Welcome to the next Challenge!
This one will start today, May 30 and go to July 4th. That gives us 5 weeks to work toward our next set of goals as we try to lose weight or maintain in a healthy way.
Everyone is welcome to join this terrific group. You can post once weekly or every day - whatever you like - to share your journey, give and get support, offer advice, get some tips. We have celebrated each other's successes, and empathized with the setbacks. I personally found, the more I respond to others, the easier it is for me to focus on my own journey in a positive way. We have seen great progress in previous challenges, in weight loss, health, learning, and non-scale success, because we are in it together and focusing on being healthier and living better lives.
Some of the terms used to report our weight:
USW - ultimate starting weight - the heaviest weight when you began to lose
SW - starting weight for this challenge
CW - current weight for the day you report in
GW - goal weight for this challenge, for Halloween
UGW - ultimate goal weight that you intend to reach eventually
Some people also include their height, their age, their BMI.
All you need to do to join, is start posting, usually with some of the weight information.
I do find this to be an amazing group of smart, wise, kind, and determined people. I look forward to this next challenge, and sharing this journey and all we learn with each of you.

@debb21 Your post made me laugh. I know what you mean about the snacking, it's my downfall, too. But I only know that because I'm logging my food so I can see it. I stopped for a few months during the winter and gained almost 10 pounds! Maybe this challenge we will both get a handle on the bad snacks.

@OrionNebula If I go walking for 30min or more, I get that swelling in my hands/wrists and have to walk around stupidly looking like a surgeon who has just washed her hands and waiting for the gloves...
Mom gets it too.

I'm happy I lost 2.2 lbs this week, but I can't get too excited. I've been this weight several times over the last month and keep going up again. I'm hoping that sticking to my step goal and watching my calories will keep the scale going in the right direction this week.
Great to see all the new folks for this challenge. Thanks for all the encouragements and insights from everyone!

Thanks everyone for your words of support. I'm constantly amazed at how quickly emotions can sway my eating habits. One minute you seem like a rational, calm human and then one emotional trigger later and I'm like the cookie monster wanting to devour all the sweets and food in sight LOL! I'm allowing myself a little grace during this time as I'm working through all the emotions that I bottled up for so long. Some days I win. Some days I lose. I'm just fighting to hopefully have more wins than losses.

@_Lilac_ I'm sorry, I probably misunderstood. No matter, I think moving is a huge advantage. It's what we're made for in any case and it does so much good!
In theory I could lose a pound each week sitting on my bum but to lose two pounds, which is my goal, I have to get out there every day and do something. I'm finding I really enjoy pushing myself at the gym and getting back into C25k because I get that feeling that I really did something significant for my body those days.
You sure you're not in a too big deficit? It can work against the point if you are, especially long term.
By the way, I understand your annoyance over not being able to go outside due to the baby crow. I'm guessing that within a week, I'll have to watch my back from the seagulls 20+ here. They're not attacking yet, but I see them being very watchful and they have nests in every direction from my house. The 10 minute walk to my grocery store is undoable when it starts and every time I want to go more than 200m away from my house I'll get them on my tail. Not looking forward to this month at all...

@Daithílocha Making huge life changes is never easy and I think losing weight is a huge life change for most people depending on their habits.
I will always recommend baby steps. Make small changes and when you feel like you've mastered one thing, maybe try changing another. A life worth of habits, good or bad, isn't going to go away in a day. Rome wasn't built in a day as they say.
As time goes by the small things you work hard on every day will become easier and maybe some day you do that thing automatically.
For me it's a mixture of dicipline and habit. I have no issues with my current calorie level even if it takes a bit of planning most days (habit) but I would also love to have a bag of chips with that and say no (dicipline).
Sometimes dicipline doesn't work and the more I "screw up" the more I learn. As my signature here says "try again, fail again, fail better". I've been in the game long enough to know that if I have 1000 calories extra one day, well then I'm at maintenance and it's not the end of the world. I just learn from it, get over it and move on.
Going out the door every day gets a bit easier but it gets very monotonous for me. Going to the gym got easy really fast because while I might not call it fun times, it makes me feel very accomplished and just generally good mentally and physically.
Seeing or feeling improvement is one of the things that push me to work harder. It can be any tiny little thing, like being able to take another sit up, increasing weight slightly on a gym exercise, jogging for another minute longer than last time, looking at myself in the mirror and thinking something changed.
So yes, it becomes easier. But eat what you like to eat and do what you like to do and it won't feel like so much work and it will be so much easier so much faster.
Good luck!

Exercise is not happening the way I would like but I'm working at it. I'm up .4 lbs from last week but I've noticed I have some swelling in my ankles so I'm betting on water retention. Ate out this weekend and went to a friends cabin so was eating outside of the norm. I'll have to watch that.

glad to see all alive and well... I'm trying to be good this week, but I was last week.
Anywho, leaving for a kids camp today to do pet therapy for the rest of the week, so should get my walking in and will try to stay in calorie range (God wiling) - Smores....
Too a nice walk this AM to check on my baby duck. It's getting to be a good size now, might be a girl duck--tbd. Gonna miss it when it flies away - gives me a nice goal each day to try and find it. Poor little guy has been all alone in the pond for many weeks now- is a survivor--quite a daily inspiration to see it perking along in the pond doing it's duckie thing without a family..
need to get back to work- but may not be able to check in until next week. Limited internet service. will be thinking of you all!

@ThatGreen thanks for your advice I have a tendency towards impatient and go all out and really it's not sustainable and hence I usually end up failing completely. It's hard to wean myself off sugar and start exercising as well. I'm at 9900 ish steps and although I'm tired and stressed I have two teenagers doing major exams starting tomorrow. They are tense and that kinda stuff tends to spread so I'm going to get my **ahem** in gear and get outside and move.

@dancefoxtrot You and I have way way too much in common - and now we seem to watch the same documentaries! Now, if only I could dance like you do. The two things I do most when things seem crazy, wether it's me or the government, are birding and photography. Both lead to long walks in natural places, and I learn a tremendous amount. And I have met some fascinating people. The Cape May New Jersey area is a big birding location. I've met people from all over the world there. It is stimulating and quiets my brain at the same time. Of course, then I read the newspaper again....
The birds you saw are definitely from your part of the country. I think scrub jays are mostly California. I hope you got to hear the thrush sing. Some of their songs sound like a flute. You seem to be walking in some wonderful places.
I'm glad your knee is letting you take those walks. Hope you are dancing too.
And hugs to you, my west coast sister.

@almost_where I like your attitude so much. I agree - it is all about learning and moving on. Taking good care of our health is always about looking at the setbacks, learning, tweaking, changing plans....
You really do have that locked down. That's a lot of resilience.

@DJC_63 I'm so glad you are still walking a lot, despite all the stress. You have gotten yourself out of all kinds of jams in life, you will this time too.
These cars really do get scary as they age. We are so dependent on them. Mine is 16 years old. Not so much fun now.

Just want to say that I am going for my second walk today. It feels so good to be mobile, after so much time unable to.
And you guys always inspire me so much. This group is so positive. It's not just everyone's determination, even in times of hardship. It's also the lightness and joy - it's @dancefoxtrot dancing and @_Lilac_ walking all over northern Canada....it makes me smile to think of you.
ok...out before it rains...

@OrionNebulawrote:
@ThatGreen my Alta HR doesn't have an option to set it into any specific mode (at least I don't think it does). It automatically recognizes a variety of exercises and logs them. It's quite possible that it's accurate. My average heart rate while playing was 120, and there was a mix of easy dances and hard ones, so my heart was going faster at different points. However, when I go for a walk, my heart rate is around 105 - 110. It just seems like I was working a lot harder playing my game! I'm interested in seeing what my heart rate will be next time I go for a hike. I'm really bad with hills and all of the great hikes around here are in the mountains... I usually have to take a lot of breaks going up long inclines. If my heart rate doesn't go up higher than my video game workout, then I will know something is off.
Have you tried taking your pulse manually? I usually do this when I feel like my readings are off.
An average heart rate of 120 isn't shabby though. Maybe check your Alta every now and then, especially when you feel like you're doing something that's easy vs something that's hard?
I've been checking my Blaze so much I pretty much know what HR I'm at when doing various things.
I'm the same as you with mountains. I take small breathers quite ofteen cause I don't have a chance of running up there in one go. I will usually push myself and start walking before I catch my breath properly again to keep my HR up. In my head I just pick out a rock or a tree or something further up the trail and go there before I take a few seconds to just breathe (and look at the view maybe).

@Daithílocha I think most of us are impatient to some degree, but in this day and age we have become so used to instant gratification it's hard to accept that things take time.
One thing I forgot to mention in my previous post is making small goals along the way and remembering to measure and recognize progress and not just weight related goals/progress.
Good luck to your and your teeenagers in this stressful time. It's almost summer and school's out so hang in there.

Whoops, almost forgot this week's weight update.
CSW: 92.3 kg
06/06 - 90.7 kg
GW: To be consistently in the 80's, leave the 90's in June 2017 and never come back.
It seems my body keeps hanging on to weight for shorter or longer periods of time then goes "oh, right, we're losing weight, cool" and I drop. This week, I dropped (yay).
On to the 80's!
