Welcome one and all to our next challenge for better health and weight loss or maintenence.
We gather here to support each other, cheering and empathizing with the process of life style
change to improve our health and quality of life.
Set reasonable goals so you can feel success.
USW= heaviest weight when you began to lose
SW=starting weight
CW=current weight
GW=goal weight for Labor Day
UGW = Ultimate goal weight - long term healthy weight goal
Some people include their BMI = Body Mass Index, and some add their height as well.
You can stop by once a week and post your progress or every day to get and give ideas and support.
Most people track their food intake as well as steps to make sure you burn at least 500 to 750 more calories than you consume. Remember eat healthy food and portions in a way that you can maintain.
We can do this together. We have seen great progress over the last 7 challenges.
Welcome.

@SunsetRunner That seems like something I would do. I have no clue how to change it but it looks artsy, so go with it.

@dancefoxtrot How are you feeling? How is the dancing going? I'm so amazed by you - you have an accident and walk yourself to a hospital, do some gardening, get back to dancing - all so fast. You are impressive, my friend.

Hi and thanks for the support and caring. About probiotics: I understand that we need both types of probiotics: the lactobacillis and bifidobacterium. Bad bacteria feed on sugar but good bacteria feed on water soluble vegetable fiber. Another good reason to avoid sugar and refined carbs. Also good bacteria makes Vit K2 which helps in bone density process. Beware of Magnesium sterate or Titanium Dioxide being added to the probiotic as it forms a film in the intestines and make absorption of nutrients more difficult. The manufacturers add that just to make the probiotics slide into the capsules, I learned. So we want a potency of 25-30 billion per capsule I believe.
Online there are rating cos. but beware of the reviews as some are getting free supplies to post good reviews!!! Amazon sells a few as does Costco and health food stores. If you have a pharmacist that you trust you might inquire as to which brand he/she reccommends. It certainly can be confusing with soooo many choices.
Here is a quote from Joel Fuhrman, MD:
Research supports the role of our intestinal microflora in disease protection and prevention.2 Probiotics affect intestinal bacteria by increasing the numbers of beneficial bacteria and decreasing potentially harmful microorganisms. They help to restore the natural balance of good bacteria in the intestinal tract.3In general, the strongest evidence for probiotics is related to their use in improving gut health and stimulating immune function.4
Picturing the human body as a host for bacteria and other microorganisms is helpful in understanding probiotics. Most probiotics are bacteria similar to the beneficial bacteria found naturally in the human gut.5 The body, especially the lower gastrointestinal tract, contains a diverse and dynamic community of microflora."
He goes on to say that if we haven't had our good bacteria wipe out by antibiotics or other meds, then a diet of veggies, fruit and beans should feed the bacteria that we need well.
In your case, I would get a good probiotic with some prebiotics in there, keep it in the frig, to help restore what was lost to antibiotics, etc.. I take them on a daily basis just because the good bacteria are vital for our immune system.
Kim chi, sauerkraut, and other fermented veggies are a natural source of them. Beware most yogurt as often it is full of sugar or corn syrup.
"
Dr. Fuhrman also states, "Prebiotics differ from probiotics. They are non-digestible food ingredients that stimulate the growth and/or activity of beneficial bacteria in the digestive tract.18 They are found naturally in a variety of plant-based foods, including onions, garlic, asparagus, leeks, artichokes, oats, and bananas.19 They provide food for the good bacteria. Prebiotics are beneficial, perhaps even necessary, to promote the growth and survival of probiotics in the GI tract. Probiotic supplements frequently contain prebiotics in the form of fructo-oligosaccarides (FOS), inulin and galacto-oligosaccharides (GOS).20
The use of probiotics shows promise for a number of health concerns, primarily those relating to the gastrointestinal tract. They have an excellent safety record and represent an option for prevention and treatment of antibiotic-associated diarrhea and relief of symptoms due to irritable bowel syndrome.
Probiotics may also be helpful for those with allergies and autoimmune diseases. Much research is currently underway in this area and progress will be continue to be made in identifying the specific species and strains of probiotics that are the most effective in each situation"
Hope this is helpful.

@klan7044 This is amazing. I am on a two-week vacation, and I'm not being as diligent as usual. Over 3000 miles driven in seven days. I hope I'll be able to focus when I get back home. You have really done a great jjob.

@dancefoxtrot Barbara, I am sending you an enormous hug. Thank you so very much for all of that great information. I have seen Fuhrman on PBS and have read some of his books. I am pretty much following his guidelines for how to eat. I don't know how I spaced out on the probiotics, especially after being on such a strong anti-biotic that really effected my whole body.
I really appreciate the effort and time you put into this. You are always so wonderfully generous with your advice. It means so much.
Thank you.
Now would you please tell me how you are doing?!

@khreed What an exciting adventure! I have always dreamed of taking a cross-country trip. Do the best you can and don't worry. You'll get back on track when you return. This group will help out with that. Just be safe and have a wonderful time.

Thanks my friend for the shout out. I'm on the mend. Had to deal with the insurance cos. today who still haven't given me any $ for my totalled car.
The other driver is fighting the witness and police report and saying he had the green arrow.
I'm just happy that there is a witness and I'm getting less sore each day.
Off to deal with laundry, garden and food and dance class today.
Bouncing like a ball on the weight thing.
147.0 this morning but not going to let that get me down.
Must have rushed off because I'm back from dance class and found this unposted.
Stay with the healthy food and moving more.

I think that you may have to rotate it in your photo program and then replace the sideway one.
I'm not a techie tho' so someone else may know a better way.

Wednesday check in for me:
Start: 152
Last week: 151
Current: 152
Goal: 144
Hm, not super happy about seeing myself back at the beginning, but it could be worse I suppose. Still going on the half marathon training - this last Sunday I ran 5 miles, which is the longest I've ever actually run, and only needed to stop twice. I'm also doing yoga and cross training on my non-run days. I was really hoping to see the numbers go in the opposite direction this week, as I feel like I've done more excercise than usual, and have eaten a bit healthier than previous weeks, but who knows.
Does anyone know if another group (or multiple groupls) like this will exist between September and the holidays? I think that's probably when I'll be looking for the most support, as I'm a grad student and classes will be in full swing again, but am still looking to make it to my ideal goal of between 115-120 (though, at this point, I would be happy with 130ish) before the end of the year when my mom and I leave for a week-long vacation in Guadeloupe.

@Bobbinyc Thanks for the support. I think I needed the break. We will be home in a few days, and then I can get back on track. It's been a welcome time away.

@rachel_g22 These challenges have been going on for at least 1 1/2 years. People who lost the weight and are maintaining continue to come. I'd recommend you make a plan before school starts. There are too many things making it difficult in school to go in without being ready.

I just saw this thread and I'd like to participate
USW= 295
SW=231
CW=216
GW=205
UGW = 177
Since 7/5, only had one day under 20,000 steps and two days under 10 miles, one of which was a force rest day due to storms and unable to walk outside or use the treadmill since we had no power that day.

@dancefoxtrot I thought of doing that. Although it is normal in my program. But I thought I'd try to turn it sideways on my program and it might be normal on here. 🙂

Hi @Bobbinyc and others,
I stopped by Whole Foods and checked out probiotics since I'm almost out. I read many labels and ended up buying Garden of Life RAW Probiotics Women 50 & Wiser which has 33 strains and 85 Billion live cultures. No magnesium stearate either. This was a 3 month or 90 cap supply and costs $53. It seemed that this was a very well rounded choice.
I'm resting now between 2 classes and shopping before I have a private lesson which I love.
Watching news and shaking my head.
Best,
Barbara G

Of course you risk standing on your head if you turn it in the wrong direction.
