Hi TracyMarie, I've been doing keto for a very short time, just 8 days, but it is working well for me so far! I've lost 4lbs since I started on 1/22. Before starting keto I did the Whole30 and lost 6lbs during that entire 30 days. The Whole30 was great for getting rid of my cravings and eating healthier in general but switching to keto has definitely reduced my appetite, making it really easy to stay on target with my calories.

Here are some links to sites I have found helpful:

Best wishes!

I've been doing Keto in combination with IF since January 2nd.  So far have lost 30 lbs.  I have done this before, in 2010/11 and lost 150 lbs.  Got distracted when I got divorced and met my current husband and went completely off plan till this year.  Glad to be back on the plan.  Im feeling a lot better, tons of energy. great sleep, and no more aches and pains all over.  The time its for life.  No more non-ketogenic food.

I'm trying a freestyle keto diet.  I've tapered on to it, having heard that it can be a shock to the system at first.  I have noticed no ill effects yet.  I don't intend to make it permanent, as I don't think this diet is meant to be a lifestyle. It is definitely helping me control blood sugar, though.  I'm a mild diabetic.  I am simply restricting carbs quite severely, counting calories and going with 1000-1200 cals intake per day.  Even without restricting carbs from starch, I have lost 30 pounds in 9 months.  I had cut out sugar as much as possible already.  Now I'm trying to get most calories from fats and protein.  I exercise a lot, mostly walking at least 5 miles a day and trying to stay in my cardio range at least 30 minutes each day.  I'd recommend the gradual startup, coupled with taking a multivitamin.  Lose weight as desired, then taper off and control weight with portion size and balanced diet.

My daughter-in-law lost a lot of weight on a formal keto diet.  I think the basic concept of more or less forcing the body to digest fat, yet limiting the calorie intake as well is probably factual as a eight loss strategy.  Just reading up on it and doing a version of it without spending money on some commercially offered program or foods/supplements seems fine.  I read about the disadvantages as well.  Some nutrients ought to be gotten from vitamin pills while on the diet.  I suppose some of the shakes and powders are fortified with those, but seem extremely expensive.  Another problem is that a high fat diet could cause cholesterol issues.  That's why I think it should be a shorter term thing.

Hi Tracy, I am a Naturopath and I find the Ketogenic diet really helpful for a number of things.  It helps get the fat mobilised and moving out the body quickly, and utilises it for energy.  It also helps to reduce LDL cholesterol and increase energy levels.  It does take a lot of willpower and unfortunately, a lot of those western diet foods we love to eat are out.  It is a moderate fat diet with no simple carbs, but good quality carbs in the form of salad greens etc. and protein.  Dense carbs like broccoli, sprouts, etc need to be eaten in moderation.  I have to be careful what meat I eat as lamb, mince and steak kick me out of Ketosis very quickly.  It's important to measure your ketones daily as they do change, as long as you are in ketosis it's not hard to stay there, just be mindful of the challenges.  I have a genetic SNP that prevents me from using fat-soluble vitamins very well so I have to take more of them and I also tend to have high LDL. Another good reason to do the keto diet and exercise, exercise. Hope that was helpful.
