So far so good, I fell off the wagon earlier but I'm back on. Down 3 pounds in 5 days...doing LOTS of cardio! I'd LOVE to be 30 pounds down in the next month!

So far down 2.5 kg down in january and 7 kg since the start of the diet a month ago and am well pleased with results. Yesterday I had a bit of a feast day but in the long run a mini binge will not hurt, I think it's good to reward ourselves every now and then. I did a bit of a detox diet on non-holiday days (when I ate mainly delicious sides and turkey and stayed away from sweets, bread, fatty stuff and alcoohol). That being said, I did make two deserts which I had a bit of on a couple of days - a flowerless no added sugar chocolate torte (the only sweetening came from 80% dark chocolate used) and a passionfruit cheescake made with lebneh instad of cream cheese and sweetened w. stevia and agave.

I'm at that point where it's my body vs. food, I am hungry all the time, no matter what I eat, so it's hard to stay the course when I want to slap food out of people's hands and scarf it down like there's no tomorrow.  I've lost 9 lbs, I just want to hit the 10 pound mark and then I'll have a 'treat' but OMG I went to bed last night hungry and depressed.

I am there as well. I have no weight loss to show but walking 22 miles last
week has left me hungry all the time - last night I mindlessly ate a lot of
peanut brittle (only sugar available!).
But sugar is a vicious cycle so I am trying to cut sweet and sweet
substititute out that may help quell the hunger.
Hang in there! eat things that blunt sugar's affects.[?]

9lbs is AWESOME. The trick is to link the feeling starving at bed time with
the slimmer person you are looking forward to becoming.
Well that's what I do 🙂
Losing weight is not worth it - SAID NO ONE EVER
Keep going my friend!

It sounds to me like you are undereating.  I know that sounds counter-intuitive, but you do need to properly fuel your body while dieting.  Dieting does not equal starving.

What is your BMR.  Make sure you are eating at least 100-150 calories above that number.  Your body is screaming at you that you are starving yourself, so feed it.  This is why people gain their weight back - they restrict, restrict, restrict, and then go overboard down the line when they just cannot restrict any further.

Will it take you longer to hit your goal weight?  Absolutely.  But at least you are doing it in a healthy manner.

Thanks for the suggestion, however I am well within my BMR, I've played around with it, the normal 2K + that fitbit proposes is too much, yeah I feel great but I gain weight, not good weight either.  I know I eat out of boredom, and I get bored easily.... my body just screams 'eat it' and it makes for a horrible inner struggle some nights... it's always the evening hours too and going to bed early is not an option, I simply toss and turn all night too.

Hmmm.  What you are describing does not sound like boredom-driven eating.  I've fallen prey to boredom eating, but I've never wanted to smack food out of other's hands because of it.  It's more like "I'm bored.  Yeah, I could eat".

The next thing I would look at would be the kinds of foods you are eating.  Are you eating a lot of starches and processed foods?  If so, try to increase your proteins and fats, and cut back on the carbs (not good carbs like non-starch veggies, but refined carbs - even if they are complex v. simple).  Your insulin levels may be out of whack which could be a culprit driving your hunger.  Did you know that 2 slices of whole wheat bread can cause higher insulin levels than a Snickers bar??  I was floored when I read that (even though I've avoided wheat, sugar and flours for almost 3.5 years).

If you've already cut out the foods I mentioned, then you might want to discuss it with your doctor.  There could be a medical reason for your hunger, i.e. thyroid or some other condition.

Oh yes, my husband eats what he wants, so do the kids (although 'kid' is realitive, they are in their 20's) and they have NO issues eating it right in front of me while I'm strugging.  It doesn't help that I work with 20-somethings that constantly bring food into the office and eat it while I am trying to work.

I try very hard to eat whole foods, following the paleo diet as my Physical Therapist said the weight just dropped off her once she switched (hasn't happened for me yet).  I'm pretty sure my insulin is out of whack..I do agree whole heartedly, it can be the only reasonable explanation.  I even went to the Dr. to have thyroid test etc, he did it (begrudgingly...they don't like you to come in with self diagnosis) and walked away realizing that my bad knee was osteoarthritis setting in....all labs were within limits tho.

I miss bread, oh my do I miss it, as my son munches on toast and butter..... I'm pretty sure my body hates me and thus is trying to dig an early grave... I should mention I am 48 so I understand there will be some challenges but uncontrolable physchological hunger is something new.  Oh and I should mention I had a reasonable baseline, most of my family is not heavy, I have had active jobs until a life change (divorce) settled me into office work. I have/had active hobbies like kayaking, hiking with my dogs, camping and cross country skiing...until knee injuries started slowing me down about 3 years ago, then an achillies tendon repair surgery back in Oct....put me on the couch (and up 30 lbs) for 2 months.

I've started eating healthy. I have researched the heck out of how to shed pounds and from everything I've found there's no miracle. Your better to eat right, not starve or deprive yourself and have a good exercise program. I started working on healthy eating last saturday and I've lost 3 lbs. I've also been working out and drinking water water water.

So what happens to those of us who have a birthday on Valentine's Day? In my case: a weekend in London, being wined and dined, V&A and the National Gallery and Rigoletto at the Coliseum. Shopping. I have given up sugar, so that might make things easier but I think I will need to lose 30 pounds AFTER Valentine's Day!

Just how do you cope with birthdays? What is the best strategy? I find Christmas, Easter etc. easier to deal with because they are celebrations for everyone but birthdays are very personal.

I am up for the 30 pound challenge. Just got my fitbit at Christmas and trying to lose first the 10 I gained. Let me know any pointers to be successful.

There are no pointers, per se, because losing 30 pounds in a month is neither achievable (in a healthy manner), advisable, nor sustainable.

This thread was started a year ago.  If you read the entire thread, not *one* person reported back with a success story.  No surprise there.  Sustainable weight loss should be slow and consistent, not fast.  The general rule of thumb for successful and HEALTHY weight loss is as follows:

2 pounds per week = 80+ pounds to lose.
1.5 pounds per week = 40-80
1 pound per week = 15-40 pounds to goal
1/2 pound per week = 10-15 pound to goal

I would suggest going to this site to ascertain your Basal Metabolic Rate (BMR), which is the minimum number of calories your body requires to maintain respiration, temperature control, etc.  If you were in a coma, this is the amount of calories that you would be fed to keep you alive.  Ideally, you should eat 150-200 calories above your BMR for successful weight loss.  Think of it this way, your maintenance calories are the ceiling, and your BMR is the floor.  Eat between those 2 numbers, and you will lose weight.  This site will give you a number of calories (based on your BMR and activity level) that will allow you to lose weight at a healthy rate:

While exercise is important for fitness, diet is the controlling factor.  Two of my favorite sayings are "You can't out exercise a bad diet" or "You can't outrun the fork".  Concentrate on eating healthy, whole foods, and avoid processed foods as much as possible.  Try to avoid added sugars (if you are eating mostly home cooked meals and are avoiding processed foods, this is fairly easy to do).  Don't be afraid of eating full fat products.  When the manufacturers remove fat from products like yogurts, salad dressings, etc., they add more sugar and other fillers to mimic the taste/texture of the missing fat.  I shop the outer aisles of the grocery store, and only venture to the inner aisles if I need things like spices, natural peanut butter (ingredients: peantus and/or salt), frozen veggies and the like.

I highly recommed the documentary "Fed Up".  It's available on Amazon, iTunes and Netflix (DVD subscription only, no streaming).  I borrowed it from my library and it was so popular that I was on the waiting list for 3 months before it became available.  Another great resource is the book "The Big Fat Surprise:  Why Butter, Meat and Cheese Belong in the Diet" by Nina Teicholz.  Real eye-openers.

Good prior post. When i just read this post the first thing i thought was they cant lose 30 pounds that fast... It take a 3,500 calorie deficit to lose one pound. They would have to be in a 105,000 calorie deficit to lose 30 pounds in a month and a half. Doubted anyone was able to pull this off.
